I view the album as halves, with The Man Who Married a Robot acting as roughly the centerpiece (I don’t count “The 1975”, which makes the divide between halves a little less lopsided). On the first half, the instrumental flourishes are mainly electronic— most (maybe all?) of the percussion is programmed, a majority of the vocals on this half are manipulated or heavily effected, and in general I’d call this half way more modern. Then the second half features mostly organic instrumentation; acoustic drums, more stripped back arrangements, and the feeling is more... old school, for lack of better words. The Man Who Married a Robot is where it all converges, itself even split into half; when the Siri narration is happening, it’s set mostly to looping, noodling (not confident with my word choice here but I’m bad at words lol) keys and soft synth pads, and then gives way to a fluttering orchestra full of strings and brass instruments.

I hope I’m making sense here... I’m convinced at this point that this is intentional on the band’s part, but I can’t seem to express it as well as I’d like to. I think the concept of the relationship between humankind and machines/computers/the internet/etc is executed very well but it’s not exclusively expressed through the lyrics. It’s woven into the sequencing and the instrumentation, in the background of songs that seem maybe completely unrelated to the narrative, lyrically. It’s clever as hell.

Really like this, I couldn’t see how the lyrics really made sense as a cohesive theme, but this makes a lot of sense. Whether it’s correct or not I’m taking it hahah

I like where you're going with this concept, though I don't really agree with it. For example, "Be My Mistake" is the most naked song on the album.

Not really a lyrical concept but the first half is more electronic and the second half is more theatric, with the interlude track being the transition point

Eh, the same kind of looping, “noodling” keys I pointed out in Man Who Married a Robot are present in Be My Mistake, there’s an entire soundscape going on beneath that song outside of the acoustic guitar and vocals.

This song kills me every time. I relate to every lyric and the way he sings each line is perfect. Fuck this album is great.

Honestly same. I don’t think it’s the best song necessarily but it’s probably my favorite.

Such a riot of excess may cause the casual observer to think: Who the fuck do these guys think they are?! This is reasonable. But it is also misguided. Because the 1975 are a thrillingly unreasonable band for unreasonable times. Healy is their generational mouthpiece—a guy who’s never met a contradiction he couldn’t fully inhabit, to arresting effect.
