I've been at my District for 8 years now and during that time have seen very little turnover, however this year is definitely the highest we've seen. Some younger teachers just straight up resigning and leaving education.

We have a new HS principal for the first time in 12 years, and also 2 new HS assistants. Our MS principal is out on leave all year, so we have an interim principal there and this year will mark the last year of our Superintendent (my direct boss) who has been the Super here for 15 years. His contract goes to 2024, but he's opting to retire next summer because he’s so beat down. A real bummer, because he's cool as hell and everyone loves him.

Kind of scared to death to see who our Board hires as his replacement because two of our board members are straight out of Fox News and hate public education - and they have a huge following within the community. Depending on who my next boss is, may determine whether or not I stay in education or go do Marketing/PR/Communications in the private sector.

Don't think we have a lot of turnover for this upcoming year other than people who left in the middle of last year who are just being replaced now.

Really hope my schedule is similar to last year's - definitely the best one I've had in at least ten years.

Very relatable with my seventh graders.

  4. I was renewed at my current school which is awesome but I want to get into my local district and I have two interviews with them next week. Both 3rd grade, but one of them is an online classroom. I’d be down for that.

It bugs me that districts do their hiring so close to the start of the school year. If you get the job, your current school is going to be scrambling. It sucks. When I left the first school I worked for, it was only one week before the start of the year. I felt so bad.

  6. i just got the offer for one of those jobs. I really want it but I’m basically leaving my current school / team a couple weeks before school starts. I’m fairly sure they can fill my job quickly but it still stinks. Just makes it really hard to leave on good terms.

Ultimately, you have to always do what's best for you. It's not your fault. Congrats on the new job!

So something I was thinking about before the school year starts, forgive me if this topic has been discussed. What words do you use when speaking to your entire class? I used to say "boys and girls" then I stopped myself and would say things instead like "okay guys" but I realize that can be problematic as well. I know the typical choices are "everyone" and "y'all".

Just wondering if anyone has a fun alternative. Please don't say "scholars."

Lol my 6th grade English teacher called us her little scholars.

i honestly mostly say “yo guys” or “everyone”. If they’re acting childish I definitely get a little petty and start calling them “boys and girls” in my best elementary teacher voice (I teach mostly 14/15 year olds lol)

My CP level inclusion classes are once again way too fucking big.

  13. I call them "you people," or "children" when they need a reminder of their social status. :)

Anyone have any quiet/silent HEPA air filters in their classrooms that they would reccomend? Wanna get one for my classroom and my wife’s this year

I default to either folks, people, you guys, y’all, etc. I’ll also ask what the community prefers. I’m always mindful of individual students’ preferences but as a whole group I find very very few students mind if a term is historically gendered as long as the intent isn’t to use it in a gendered way

Starting my first day of college today! Decided to go back at 27. Very excited and very nervous to be back in the classroom but I'm really interested in the course subject so... here we go!

Sorry didn't notice this was for educators and not general education lol

Has anyone submitted a Teacher Loan Forgiveness Application?

I am in my 6th year at a Title 1 school teaching Special Education so I am eligible for the $17,500 forgiveness. With the Biden administration's $10k forgiveness this would clear out all my student loan debt I have left. What I am confused about is how I actually submit it...

It's section 6 on the form and it doesn't have an address and says to contact the loan holder if there is no address. On my loan holder's website (Nelnet) all the information they have about it just takes me to the student aid website. I have tried calling twice now and the wait times were both really long so I gave up. Posted on Reddit about it and figured I would try here as well.

I was on my way to title 1 forgiveness but in my 4th year the school no longer qualified for Title 1 status, so unfortunately I"m not much help here. I do know Betsy DeVos' Dep of Ed really fucked up the entire system and created a lot of problems with it, basically broke it, so the current Admin was working on making it an easier process and getting it fixed.

I was under the impression that as long as the first year you started working there it had Title 1 status it did not matter what happened the following four years as long as you stayed there. If you would otherwise qualify for the $17,500 and it would be worth it over the PSLF I would look into it again. I know that if you go the route of TLF the clock resets on the PSLF and you have to do 10 years of payments again so for many with substantial debt the $17,500 isn't worth it.

Is there a thread for students at all? Could I post about my experiences in this thread or would that clutter it up? I've recently started attending college at 27 and I wanna talk about my experience so far lol
