Article was great but I felt irrationally sad for Meredith and Olivia.

 

Alright I'll say it: I would have loved for the author to challenge her, or at least go more in depth on her belief that she was "cancelled", because living through that era it doesn't really feel like she was? Perception of her had for sure turned a bit negative but she was still on an extremely popular all stadium tour, posting huge sales numbers, and making tons of money. I just don't subscribe to the belief she was actually "cancelled", especially because as we see time and time again most people are never truly "cancelled".

What does everyone else think? This is like the big talking point on X now.

 

I’ve come to terms with the idea that celebrities/rich people live in an entirely different world than the rest of us so when they start talking about being cancelled I just kind of …dissociate.

Like, to move away to Europe and hide in a rental for a year actually sounds like a dream come true! But I gotta get my ass to work or I’ll literally die!

On the other hand, that time was clearly traumatizing for her. She has alluded to being suicidal back then more than once. And I can very much relate to being told that my problems aren’t real problems so I get it and I feel empathy towards her but I totally understand why most people don’t lol

 

I think the disconnect we see is also that generally, her fans didn’t turn on her. But a ton of the general media did (see: all the clips to start the rep tour). So it felt louder than it actually was, as proven by the rep album/tour.

 

at the time she said being canceled is the same as people they wish she was dead which is not true, you can't be the biggest person on the planet and not have some people hate you or find you annoying it's inevitable, there is literally no one on the planet that everyone loves

I also think with limited exceptions famous people probably just shouldn't be online it's unhealthy

Her thinking she's canceled shows her privilege imo. Other women had their careers absolutely tank from "scandals" and yeah some people were awful and tweeted snake emojis and as a fellow people pleaser I get it. It feels devestating I also have a job where it's virtually impossible to please everyone and people hating me comes with the territory. Granted it's on a smaller scale but I'd argue a possibly higher stakes one but obv idk her life to say that with arrogance or certainty. But I feel like she needs to do the work to understand how privileged she is and put things into perspective. Reputation was an insanely successful era. I think in her head she legit still sees herself as the lil underdog fighting back against the bullies when rn she's like too big to fail. She's never had an actual flop. She'd lose her mind if that happened. I get she's endured a lot of awful things as a woman in the industry but like many big artists they see all the haters and get lost in that noise as I'm sure it seems amplified
