That sounds like an awesome first listen to this album.

This is really nice. Pretty much exactly what I wanted when the album was announced: atmospheric, ghostly, late-night pop music. Somewhere between the understated second half of Reputation and the more lyrical feel of the last two albums. As mentioned before, can't wait to hear it on a late-night drive.

    Got a light?

Snow on the Beach is kind of on another level currently, maybe because I’ve heard it more and it’s grown but def my current fav

Feels like she’s trying to shove so much into these songs

Why does Labyrinth just whimper out at the end. I wanted it to build and then explode!

Karma could have been an absolute banger if not for the cringe.

not much grabbed me first listen through besides 4 or 5 songs. will do a headphone listen tomorrow.

  10. How long until fans start saying “She didn’t release any pre-release songs because even she knew this album was kinda underwhelming so she wanted us all to buy it before we heard anything off it”?

Mostly jk. But I can’t be the first one who thought of that.

So what you’re saying is I shouldn’t buy the clock?

  12. Don’t think it’s underwhelming at all.

  13. “If she was ever messing with us and doing something like a fake album then this is it and it would explain why no singles. It's just so wildly different.”

Hahaha this is exactly what people said when FOAM came out

Yeah people were convinced FOAM was a throwaway album so Green Day could get out of their contract and release the album they actually wanted to make and they haven't released anything since haha

This album is incredible. Retains the mood and atmosphere of her last two while using the production of her best album, 1989. (Well, besides Red of course). I love it. I hope the chaotic surprise is an alternative version album of these songs using acoustic instruments.

There’s nothing underwhelming about it at all lol it’s a pretty big stylistic shift from where she’s been how are more people not hearing it

there’s hints of r&b on this which is not something we’ve heard from her at all.

This album leaked like four hours ago and people in this thread are already like, "Oh, that's too bad, she's lost her mojo."

  20. This one really is like a mashup of Reputation and Lover, mixed with some 1989 synths and something new. Lots of minimalism in the production too, which is interesting.

I can't help rolling my eyes a bit at album threads on this site when a big release drops. It's always either "This is the greatest thing ever, OMG!" or "This entire album is meh and I've made up my mind on that immediately." I feel like people forget that it's ok for a first listen not to knock your socks off, or for you to not be feeling every single song right away. I realized a few years ago that I was putting too much weight on first listens for highly anticipated albums from my favorite artists, and usually coming away kind of disappointed as a result. I get the sense that a lot of people here do the same thing: You idealize and romanticize the first listen because it's so exciting when you DO hear an album that absolutely floors you from the word go. But I think it's important for us all to remember that the first listen is just the FIRST listen. There's no album I ever loved that didn't get better by several orders of magnitude once I spent more time with it and really got inside of it.

  23. I totally get what you’re saying. I think it comes down to the first listen not meeting expectations. If it doesn’t sound like what you were expecting, or doesn’t exceed your expectations, then I can see why people might feel underwhelmed initially. But once you let those initial feelings go and listen to it openly, that’s when you can really start connecting with it and making memories with it.

I’m looking forward to hearing the album more, and especially in better quality. I can tell some of the songs are gonna be growers, and I’ll need to read the lyrics. I was listening while on a drive so I couldn’t pay full attention. But there were 3 songs that I immediately was like “ok I really this one!” There’s some really beautiful vocal tones and melodies on here. And the minimalistic production on some of these songs is really cool and different for her.

100% agreed. except folklore, which is an exception because the writing on that album literally blew me away on first listen. also maybe 1989 and reputation because I was cackling the whole time like she was a mathematician who'd unlocked some secret to the pop universe.

I feel like Craig just sat us all down and told us he's not angry at us, just disappointed.
