For real. Shout out to the OG Nightmare of You lineup. I’m not someone who seeks out meeting bands but those guys were super cool. Brandon was a sweetheart.

I did enjoy Bend to Break and still largely do, but I remember it receiving a lot of criticism when it was released. Much of the backlash stemmed from comparisons to other former members who had left and started creating music that was seen as more innovative and diverse.

Was that the Weezer/Taking Back Sunday/The Fray show at Nassau Coliseum in 2005? That was a great show!
But yeah I've met the band multiple times, and each time Mark was the coldest of the bunch. Fred and Rubano were always the most friendly. There were points I'd talk to them and it felt like they'd let me talk their ear off for hours if I didn't walk away.

I definitely felt bad for Fred when Bend to Break came out. No one expected it to be as big as TBS, but the lack of interest by everyone was surprising. And then Terrible Things was arguably one of his best works, put out on a major label with the added of star power of Josh and Andy, and it performed even worse. I'm sure he has regrets about how he exited TBS.

It was an enjoyable record. Certainly wasn’t aiming to be anything daring like The Needles the Space and it was funny he’d tour with Straylight Run soon after.

Now speaking of Fred and Straylight Run, when is Will Noon going to join TBS for a Breaking Pangaea reunion? They’ve got drums to fill.

That is still such a weird combo of artists.

I’m just going to say it: I liked bend to break but there was no one I was going to tell with a straight face,

“oh yeah check out this band called the color Fred”

    what a horrible band name

Yes sir! Incredible show from start to finish by all.

So it wasn’t a one-off situation and that’s just who he is. Gotcha. I knew it wasn’t fair to judge too harshly from one encounter 20 years ago, but the way he’s handling this vs how Eddie did speaks a lot to both of their character.

Rubano came across like he’d be friendly based on interviews during that era so I’m not too surprised you’d say that. You’d think he was the frontman of the band at the time based on how comfortable he was off-stage compared to Adam. Again, things have changed. Bringing John and Shaun back really seemed to loosen Adam up. Growing up likely had a part to play as well.

And yeah, Fred has always seemed like an overall good dude so it was rough seeing him perform a headlining set to what was likely under 100 people at a School of Rock in NJ the day his album was released. Meanwhile two months earlier I saw him at a sold out amphitheater performing before two of the biggest rock acts around, while being in a prolific rock band himself. I don’t think he ever could have predicted how few people would follow his future endeavors despite how much talent he clearly displayed in TBS.

Lesson to be learned. Never use a poll on the Internet to pick your band name.

Use the Wu-Tang Clan name generator.

Ha, I remember that Nassau show you're all talking about. Weezer fans were pretty ruthless to openers back in the day. I remember The Fray lead singer talking before "How to Save a Life"—longgggg before they blew up—about how personal the song was and people were like "wrap it up dude!"

    this is all there is

I genuinely wish all the best for Eddie, but thinking a band named FGAD would get him anywhere at his age is hilarious to me. With a name that bad, they would have needed the best songs, the best marketing, and still a ton of luck for that to stick.

I also remember Adam exchanging words with someone in the crowd because of all the heckling.
And then less than a year later TBS came back to Nassau Coliseum as a headliner for the Louder Now tour (with Angels & Airwaves and Head Automatica opening) and that was one of the most wild crowds I'd ever seen for them.

I ended up going to the Six Flags show for that tour instead because I got lost on my way back to NJ from Nassau. This was back when MapQuest directions had to be printed out.

Should have invested in a Garmin earlier and went back out to LI. Six Flags was weak.

And that was a genuinely earnest preamble before the song, which I actually connected with. Those damn ruthless Weezer fans (I say while sporting a goofy Rivers avatar).
