I don't know much about Apocrypha. Is it a LCG/CCG?

 

They're calling it an "ACG" (adventure card game) along the lines of Pathfinder ACG, I believe. Basically a cooperative tabletop RPG type game, but handle entirely through cards rather than pen/paper, at least as I understand it.

 

That sounds super interesting. I'll have to do some research.

 

Anybody play The Lord Of The Rings living card game? Interested in that.

 

We've been playing a lot of Star Wars: Rebellion and Dominion lately. Feel like I should follow this thread to see if there's other recs that pop up for our next obsession after we conquer the galaxy a dozen more times.

 

You know, I bought Dominion almost a year ago and still have yet to learn how to play it. I should get on that

 

I really enjoy Dominion. It's pretty easy to get into. Just don't worry about going down the rabbit trail of all of the expansions. Prosperity is pretty great though.

If you like the building a deck aspect but want to take it further try out Clank. (I've said it a few times already. But I love it) It's like Dominion but with a board that lets you explore a dungeon before a dragon eats everyone.

I haven't played Rebellion but I'd love to. I just have to find someone with it. Does it really feel like "Star Wars in a box"?

 

The instructions are a pain, and you're going back to them constantly to check specific rules, and the combat is a little convoluted and takes you out of the game sometimes ... but besides that — yes. I fist pumped destroying the Death Star last night and there really is this tension and feel back and forth from both players. The Rebellion player starts out and is like "I'm fuckkkkkkeedddd" but you start doing some stuff, get all crafty, and the Empire is storming around you and it's a lot of fun. We've played four games now (they take about 2-3 hours for us cause we are checking all the rules so often to make sure cards and whatever can do what we think they can do), and truly loved it.

 

If you like Dominion I definitely recommend checking out both Clank as already recced here, and Tyrants of the Underdark. Both are deckbuilders with boards with different flavors, clank being a quasi race to get the best loot and get out and Tyrants being an area control screw your friends over, dominate the board and win.

As for similarly good 2 player experiences (tho I still need to play SW:R), War of the Ring is one of my top games of all time and probably the best 2 player game I've played (With Twlight Struggle a cold war game, following). It's LOTR based and even though I'm not huge into that series, I really loved how the game intertwined the theme with game-play.

Dominion expansions to check out would be prosperity, seaside and intrigue. Prosperity and Seaside being my favorites.

 

Nice. I don't have a ton of time for 2-3 hour games anymore. I love me a long and involved game but the kids usually get in the way.

I'll have to look up Tyrants. I've never heard of it.

My 5 year old has taken an interest in games this past year so I've been doing a lot to find more interesting games than just roll and move games. I'm hoping in a few years to have a full fledged gaming partner in her.

 

They're pretty similar to cats. Just leave a little did and water for em and they'll be good for a few days

Just got my four siblings to play D&D with me for my birthday! It'll be my first time DMing, but I'm stoked!

Decent chance that this will be the only time we all play (we don't all live in the same city), so I'm thinking a one-shot is the only way to go. My brothers might have a hard time role-playing, so I've been thinking about coming up with a fun Narnia-type "sucked into another world" type adventure where they play as themselves and the class they pick. Nervous about first time DMing and writing my own story, but the good thing is my players will have no idea when I mess up!

I’ve heard the buzz.

 

We finally opened the game a couple of weeks ago and have since played through once, although we missed all but two harvests (lol). The written instructions are HORRIBLE, but eventually we found enough online resources to help us understand. We’re confident that we’ll play correctly next time, and we already know we’re going to love it.

What’s your favorite of all time?

 

I remember the first time playing from the rule book being really rough. Did you play with the cards for the first game? That makes the game twice as long and much more complex strategy-wise.

My favorite game is Power Grid. I love the economic story arch to it and how it all comes together in the end. The shifting market, tight board, sitting from behind and coming up in the end... it’s all perfection.
