I’ve never understood the hate for Underclass Hero. It has some of their best songs (“Underclass Hero”, “Walking Disaster”, “Speak of the Devil”, and then “Best of Me” is easily their strongest ballad). Admittedly I have a lot of nostalgia attached to the album but yeah I’ll always think of it as one of their best

 

My ranking is always changing slightly. As of right now:

If I had to count Heaven and Hell as one, I'd probably put it between DTIL and SBM. A lot of these are super close together even if they are further down the list.

 

It took me some time to turn around on Underclass Hero, but when it released I was very unenthused due to a combination of factors.

Chuck was so good (and remains their best album) and I was looking forward to more of that only for them to follow up with what felt like a big step backwards. Trying to return to the sound of AKNF felt like pandering.

On top of that, they led with a lead single that borrowed whole bits from a Chuck b-side that I had already become incredibly familiar with, which at the time to me felt lazy and disappointing.

The title track is legit them just trying to write "Fat Lip" again!

 

I don’t think Underclass Hero sounds anything like Fat Lip

 

Multiple songs reuse melodies and riffs from previous songs, and not in a tribute kinda way, in a lazy way. The guitar playing is so boring without Dave, just absolutely lifeless and it's all just a shell of their former selves, Sum41-lite, diet version, Walmart version

Underclass Hero (the song) wants to be on American Idiot so bad

 

I find it funny that even after what most fans knew was made flat out clear in Deryk's book about the guitar parts, people still attribute them to Dave.

People should re-visit that album and not keep the same mindset as when it came out. It's extremely solid and has probably grown on me the most over the years.

 

Writing a guitar part and actually playing it are not even remotely the same thing, come on, what are we doing here

 

What are we doing here ... he literally talks about recording them. The whole "In Too Deep" solo story?

you're getting way into the weeds here, for four albums Dave absolutely brought SO MUCH to the band, and it was clearly evident once he left. You could hear it on the albums, at live shows, this is not an unpopular thought. I understand that you love Underclass Hero, that's great, but that doesn't mean that anytime someone says something negative about it you have to fly in like Superman to defend

 

Sigh. Stating a fact that we now know is not getting "into the weeds." It's factual. To be half as snarky as you seem to want to be: I understand you haven't read Deryck's book, but maybe that's worth doing before saying things like "the guitar playing is so boring without Dave" when we now know who wrote and played the guitar parts on the albums?

 

IIRC, Deryck does talk about how on Chuck they both recorded leads. I think Dave played all the guitars on The Bitter End.

 

the general sentiment though is that dave was such a driving force in the creation of the guitar parts. Yeah he’s great to have live, but i wouldn’t say they necessarily suffered without him. Obviously having him is a great benefit though. Personally i didn’t notice too much when it came to the playing on the studio albums, but thats just me.

 

From what I understood, Deryck absolutely did not play all the lead guitar parts on the first four albums, that was Dave. From what I understand, Deryck wrote many of the guitar parts for the band since the beginning, which is not uncommon at all. Again, writing and playing are extremely different. I understand that some people don't notice, but it is very clear if you listen to Chuck and Underclass Hero that the guitar is not being played by the same human anymore

 

When you listen to that album, my guitar is on the left side and Dave is on the right. I played the few guitar solos on "In Too Deep" and "All She's Got," but Dave and I both did some leads when playing live. I know it sounds strange now, but Dave Brownsound didn't play all the lead guitar back then. He was always a great guitar player, but he hadn't become the incredible solo god yet.

I don't have time to go find all the rest of the quotes. But, it's a good book! Everyone should read it that's ever been a fan of the band.

To be fair, what Steve is saying is exactly what I thought for a long time until they came back in 2016 and Deryck started clearing up that misconception in interviews

 

I don't know what part that I said is disagreeing with anyone else here, I know that Dave didn't write the majority of the guitar parts, that is not even part of the conversation I am having. Multiple times I have made the very obvious point that writing and playing are different, and it's very obvious that the person playing the guitar on those first four albums, more specifically Chuck and Infected, is not the same person playing on Underclass Hero
