Not quite the same since it's technically two different bands, but Dan Andriano reused the same verse lyrics/melody with some slight changes on I Remember A Rooftop with Alkaline Trio and then From This Oil Can on his first Emergency Room album

That last example wouldn't count unless those "bits" were commercially released.

The other two, fair play, and I didn't know about them.

However, I would argue what separates them from Sum's example is that while the other two reused instrumentals, Sum lifted their own chorus, lyrics and all, which is what makes it so noticeable.

this is by no means an excuse, but the choruses are just the tiniest bit different. There’s like 2 words where the order is switched. It’s like the “and” and “cause”.

Also i personally have no problem with them reworking the chorus into a new song with different verses and a totally different tone. But i can see it from both sides.

I was about to say I actually enjoyed seeing band being able to use the same chorus in the two songs with completely different tone.
Subject To Change still being my favorite of the two. UH is still good even though it also uses same phrasing in prechorus as Fat Lip haha

Same with the intro of Is This Thing Cursed and the first song on Party Adjacent

Subject To Change also contains parts that ended up in No Reason which is presumably why it was a bonus track to begin with.

I only just discovered it today, and I'm surprised about that

An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

I guess I don't see that much difference haha. the Alkaline Trio examples here including the Emergency Room one I forgot about aren't just instrumentals they're reused lyrics and melodies too. I guess Subject to Change is notable because it turned into two different songs instead of one

Might be in the minority here, but I enjoyed a couple of the UH bonus tracks. As I recall, Deryck said he was writing very overtly pop-punk songs for UH and then didn't release many that fit that bill on the final album...so those bonus tracks are fun to hear for me.

No Apologies is probably one of my favorite songs from the UH sessions. Wish it would have made the album. This Is Goodbye is pretty good too. Take A Look At Yourself is decent, but kind of has the Black Parade melody to it.

While I, too, thoroughly enjoy the Heaven side (and Hell, as well) -- I can't help but say I'm distracted on a few songs (Time Won't Wait in particular) for how much they sound like they could have been (ugh) Machine Gun Kelly pop-punk songs.

Maybe it's the energy, or the vocal delivery? I enjoy them nonetheless, but the MGK-ness caught me by surprise i guess.

The irony of this is that MGK was trying to evoke that era of pop-punk, and now we're describing that sound as belonging to him. Time is a circle, filled with bleach.

exactly why it's weird to have that sort of reaction to these new Sum songs, as if he successfully aped the sound in the first place. haha

Well there is definitely something to this. I've had the same reaction to a few of the songs. The thing is many of the MGK songs had verses sounding a very particular way, and not really exactly like the good old pop punk era, in my opinion. Could be something with the instrumentals as well. I can't unhear the similarities.

  20. I consider myself lucky I've never heard a MGK song and don't intend to change that, ah!

the main riff from green day’s ‘walking contradiction’ is used in ‘haushinka’. albeit a few bpm’s faster.
