Succession (HBO) TV Show • Page 119

Discussion in 'Entertainment Forum' started by primavera, Aug 16, 2018.

  1. I was planning on starting Industry which I always heard is in the same vein.

I tried Billions but couldn’t make it through the first season and is not really comparable to Succession.

industry rocks but i wouldn’t really compare it to succession, it’s closer to euphoria but made by someone who isn’t braindead

I quit Industry after about 4 episodes. Not my thing. I understand the comparison, but Succession takes an extremely different approach—at least, way more subtle and it trusts the viewer more.

i would say the approaches in the filmmaking are where they’re most similar. the shooting style is very succession. the writing and acting style is more zippy and closer to euphoria but not bad.

yeah i just kinda treat it like a medical show where they’re saying shit but the details aren’t that important

I might end up liking industry more than succession, if they keep the story going as brilliantly as it currently is. I think other than the whole business aspect there aren’t many similarities at all. I don’t know why but I kind of understand the biz stuff in industry, I feel like they also try to kind of guide and educate you so you’re not totally clueless on anything.

Funny enough, I only started watching when Andy Greenwald did a podcast with the showrunners.

yes both are just through their production company

a lot of people will get “executive producer” credits if they direct the pilot of a series, so they get paid out through the series but the series has their name recognition. oftentimes they aren’t involved creatively beyond the first episode.

  13. Interesting. I liked that one enough but felt like I could smell the McKay vibes on it. Maybe just tired of rich people trying to satirize rich people. Planning on giving it another go.

I feel like this was actually a huge point the show was making for the final 3 episodes. As a viewer I think most people clearly understood that Mencken was probably not going to ever become President. But it’s barely mentioned or thought of in these peoples universe. They are so detached from reality and anything that is actually happening outside of their own ecosystem of desire and ambition that it doesn’t even cross their mind (even Shiv blots it out after election night pretty much).

I have no idea on what McKay’s life story is, but I’m totally fine with people who go from normal/struggling status to rich/successful critiquing the wealthy. It’s gotta be wild to get rich as a result of your work and being thrown into another social stratosphere as a result. I can imagine it gives you a unique perspective on the attitudes & behaviors of the ultra rich that yields good material if you don’t allow yourself to get sucked up by it once you “make it”.

Rewatching season 3 and at the end of “Retired Janitors of Idaho” when Carl is praising the work of Shiv, Gerri and Roman the absolute shitface cheese eating grin Connor on his face is immaculate. He clearly thinks Carl is going to list him as someone who helped accomplish the deal and how they handled the shareholders meeting and his brief grimace when he doesn’t get mentioned is great.

I’m sure that could be said a million times as Connor is so good at being the total doofus he is. There are times I wonder if he isn’t the worst of the four kids lol.

Connor has the "best" professional life (none) and the absolute most disturbing personal life of all the kids

I think it was interesting also how he's at the dinner party during that scene in the finale when they're watching the clip of Logan, Karl, Frank, Gerri. Like that he's part of the circle of people that Logan actually considers "friends" at the end of the day. And in a completely nonparental way

I just rang out the actor who plays Karolina, she was super nice. I actually didn’t recognize her at first so I didn’t get to say fuck off, which is probably for the best.

what does “rang out” mean? I don’t think I’ve heard that term/phrase before.

I'm guessing Mick means "rang out" like "rang them up at checkout", like in a retail or restaurant setting.
