I’m not a huge Rogue One guy. It looks great and has some fun stuff but yeah, the story retcons of every prequel from the trilogy to Rogue One and Solo has been bad

Rewatching it, he doesn’t appear to be exerting much energy lol. He’s kinda just rolling right along without being challenged even a little bit.

Just once, I’d like a prequel to something that didn’t feel the need to answer “questions,” lol. Deciding to show the Kessel Run is one of my least favorite examples of that.

While I’m still annoyed it was addressed at all, I was so thankful Captain Marvel at least was like, “screw it, whatever, Fury lost his eye to a space cat he was petting,” lol.

I like the Vader hallway scene. It's a little tacked on and obviously there for the fan service, but it's just kind of awesome. I don't think it's completely out of the story though since it has the setup of the earlier Vader scene. I also think it plays into the theme of the movie, like @Tim said.

I think you could argue that the Tarkin role in RO could have been reworked to be Vader. He's someone who disliked the idea of the Death Star anyway, so it could have been interesting to see his impatience with Krennic over the construction of a Super Weapon he openly disdains. The scene at the end would probably fit and also play out as cathartic for Vader having to clean up more of Krennic's mess. That being said, I do enjoy the squabbling between Krennic and Tarkin.

On the subject of Tarkin (and to stir up more shit posts from the thread) - CGI Tarkin takes me out of the movie more than the space Leia scene in TLJ.

There's too many villains in RO. I like Vader's hallway scene but he shouldn't have been in the movie. Should have just been Krennic and Tarkin (played by an actual lookalike actor).

The myth of "too many villains" has to be one of my absolute least favorite talking points when in comes to blockbuster movies like this, lol.

When people say that, I guarantee, almost every single time, the actual unrecognized underlying issue is "too much plot"/"too many character arcs"/"too much story"/whatever. Simply having a recognizable character be present doesn't inherently create the problems people think of when they think of, say, Spider-Man 3. It depends on how the overall thing is structured.

There's no reason why both Vader & Tarkin can't be representatives of the larger Empire structure that Krennic is operating in. If they'd gone one more step & included Palpatine, that probably would've been a step too far (though maybe still doable?), but both Vader & Tarkin make sense as superiors who would've had their hands in Krennic's business. They're not present enough to eat up screentime that should've gone to Krennic, & when they are present, they're additive to his story, not distractions. (Which, I've grown into seeing him as one of the best characters in the film. Really like how he gives a face to the recurring bit in the original trilogy where Empire officials are killed.)

That being said, CGI Tarkin is awful both aesthetically & ethically, & I still can't believe they were proud enough of their work to include a lingering shot of him, lol. Should've recast him.

And, on the note of shoehorning known characters, I think it makes sense for the best version of Rogue One to have Vader, Tarkin, Bail Organa, Mon Mothma, & even a Leia cameo (though maybe don't show her face, lol). But, C-3PO & R2-D2 completely took me out of the movie, lol. And, while it's more minor, the cameo of those random recognizable extras in the crowd was also bad. I'd have permitted a hologram Palpatine cameo sooner than those awful choices. If you're gonna have fan service, at least have it flow smoothly & make story sense!

I'll keep it short. The original Battlefronts were lousy (I really wanted them to be good) compared to other games of its type and also other SW games. It plays poorly compared to games released way before it such as Battlefield 1942, Jedi Outcast, etc.

Some of the prequel fights were good, some of them were really bad. I love all of the lightsaber fights in the original trilogy.

Rogue One is great and Vader's part was fun.

I don't really understand the complaints about this thread - I love talking about Star Wars even when my opinions completely differ from what most people think. I love Rogue One, but the last third of the movie is my least favorite part. I kinda feel like the movie falls apart at the end but I realize this is pretty much the exact opposite of how almost everyone else feels. But that's fine. It's still fun to talk about.

I think The Rise of Skywalker is ASTOUNDINGLY bad, on the level where I can't even believe that well-respected and highly accomplished filmmakers were involved in it's making or that anyone can watch it and feel that it is anything other than a complete and utter unmitigated disaster, but I recognize that for most people it's a really fun space adventure movie and a great Star Wars movie - but I still enjoy coming in here and talking about it.

I actually like the fact that they directly connected the last scene of Rogue One with Vader to the start of ANH. He sounds more pissed off and stressed and angry at the start of NH than I can remember him being throughout the rest of the series, and I like that Rogue One gives a little more background to that situation. Dude had just wrecked shit and came within a few feet of retrieving the plans, no wonder he’s so pissed by the time they finally catch Leia’s ship

I'm not trying to be contrarian just for the sake of it here, but honestly I STRONGLY disliked the way the ending of Rogue One went right up until the moments before ANH. It reminded me of how Peter Jackson ended his recent Hobbit trilogy by having it literally link right up to the moment the other - and much much better trilogy mind you - started. It felt to me like being spoon-fed by the filmmakers as if we are too fucking stupid to realize this story comes before the other story without having a frame from this movie walk right up to the exact second of the other movie. I know it's a silly minor complaint and honestly it makes much, much more sense in Rogue One.

It is probably the right way to do it in Rogue One if I am being objective but I think for me it is a symptom of my having been so invested in the earlier part of the film, the part most people feel is the weaker part, and the film losing me a little bit towards the end where I feel like I can see where they abandon the movie they were making and just shove in a bunch of exciting Star Warsy reshoots.

Plus, it also hits a nerve with me where I feel like every decision they make with the live action Star Wars stuff just serves to make the universe feel smaller and smaller when they have the resources and opportunity to be doing the exact opposite. They have Disney money now and they are hiring very talented filmmakers to tell stories in the Star Wars universe. There are almost no limits to the stories they could be telling right now and instead we get the exact moments right before ANH and a baby Yoda...?

For me the biggest problem with RO is that it's an event I had no interest in and didn't care about, so if that's the case I at least need good, well-drawn characters to get me hooked into the story. But all the humans are just so bland except Forest Whitaker, who is just bathing in the river of ham. That being said the film is much better than I ever expected it to be, even if my opinion of it goes down a little every time I watch it. Vader scene is totally fan service but it's fan service that makes sense in the context of the story and adds a lot of tension so I don't have a problem with it.

Solo is good. I wish it wasn't so beholden to explaining things we didn't need explanations too, but it's a lot of fun and I enjoyed it feeling more small scale than the other films.

I agree that Solo was pretty good. Better than I ever expected it to be. But this part was AWFUL. I can totally see shutting the movie off at that point.

Solo is my second least favorite, just below Revenge & just above Rise. In retrospect, it really feels like a practice round for so much of what’s wrong w/ Rise.

The major key Imperial March as in universe patriotic propaganda & Han speaking Wookie to Chewie were good moments, though.

  21. I remember being really annoyed at blockbusters that summer because Solo and Deadpool 2 were both so shitty to their female characters.

Also extremely unpopular opinion time: I dig how Solo got his name. It's a completely half-assed, spur-of-the-moment type of thing that perfectly defines Han's demeanor and his way of dealing with things.
