I liked it. Plot was super thin but it got a lot of good emotional beats and the action was fun

  2. Weird take from the dude that so obviously capitulated to fan outrage in the movie he’s talking about here. :crylaugh:

  3. ... and yet the part that was cut is that he’s her dad

I'm torn on it. Obviously Disney/J.J. took a lot of influence from TLJ criticism, but also J.J. just makes fanboy tick movies when dealing with the bigger franchises (Trek, SW), so I'm sure his view is somewhere in the middle.

Agree with the majority of comments in this thread. Really can’t tell where this movie is landing with me...because I liked a lot of it at a surface level, but tons of aspects of it get so much worse when you actually analyze them. I feel like all of the themes/takeaways and the end of some of the plot lines were pretty much picked by spinning a wheel. Even more than “undoing” things from TLJ...it was just a mess of random shit.

I'm listening to the Force Center review of this right now and it's helping me find some positive things to take from this. Ultimately, I do want to see this again, but that's more so I can see what my reaction to it will be a second time.

This isn't a good thing, but I think if I watch this ignoring the context of it in a trilogy and just as a single movie I might enjoy it and be able to focus past my nagging thoughts of, "why is this so disconnected from the first two movies in the worst way?"

Man, it has been fun arguing with the toxic fans about this. Like according to them, TLJ is still the worst movie ever and people should praise JJ for “fixing” what Rian did. They also think people are being stupid for objectively criticizing the movies for its problems and this is basically what they wanted. There’s also the people who are going on about how they’ll never support SW ever again which I say good, less toxic people to deal with.

Wait, is this a thing? I don't think I've seen it verified.

I may have actually seen that one. I've been making my through the thread, but I may have glossed over a few pages.

Of course that was the plan. Well, I liked the moment without that context.

I don’t think I it’s 100% confirmed. But in the visual dictionary Lando is described as having settled down and starting a family and his daughter got taken from them. There is a quote cut from the final film of “the First Order hit us where it counts, they took our kids.” So, yea, that has to be what they are implying.

    Ugh.
Just finished reading your first impressions and you hit the nail on the head with how disappointing the Rey Palpatine reveal is. God I hope I enjoy this more the next time I see it. Reading your thoughts, I'm pretty envious that you had fun with aspects of it if you shut off your brain. I really found almost no fun in this and it's down there with the prequels for me.

I genuinely thought you were being snarky when you said he was her dad. God damn this franchise’s obsession with bloodlines is brutal.

    Keep on moving. Busy street.

I've just watched the movie with subtitles (because I'm not from an English speaking country) and supposedly the line is "Knights of Ren - ghouls" not "goals".

I’m not sure if it would have fixed anything for me. But I wonder if that’s where all his dialogue went post turn. And I want to watch the last scene with that in mind and see if it looks possible.

I still think it's goals. The delivery of the line doesn't really work if it's ghouls. Even though that would be much less cringey.

  24. Finally saw this tonight here in London!

Despite all its flaws, I have to say I liked this one better than TLJ, but not nearly as much as TFA.

The first 1/3 or so (maybe even the first half) felt so rushed, like JJ had to cram in all sorts of shit before he could move onto the real meat of the movie.

I’m looking forward to reading all of the “13 things you missed!” articles that are surely out there. I don’t have a lot of knowledge of anything “Star Wars” that isn’t specifically just the movies. And then after I read all that stuff, I want to go see it again.

I laughed, I cried, I sighed. It was a Star Wars movie. Not close to the best, but not close to the worst.

    Thank you and goodnight.

I heard "ghouls." I don't think star wars has ever really inserted any current pop culture language in their movies.
