Also, leia was so rough to watch. It was like they were interacting with a PS2 AI character who just said random ass lines.

I would’ve much preferred that she wasn’t in this at all

It was odd at times, but I feel like it worked overall. The second time through I did play the game of which scene from TFA was this cut from. The always in the shadows from the beginning was surely to Han about Snoke originally, but it fits Palpatine, too.

I am guilty of this. My ranking was really a response to people saying this was worse than the prequels, which I personally think is absurd. I would say most people who don't have a lot of interest in Star Wars could watch this and say it was a decent and fun movie if a little weird and hyperactive, whereas I don't think any non die hard Star Wars fan can really stomach sitting all the way through any of the prequel films.

I should have just typed this thought out in sentence form instead of ranking though.

Oh god I thought the Stormtroopers said “Knights of Ren - Cool!” and rolled my eyes thinking I must’ve misheard the line because there’s no way that was the actual dialogue. Turns out I was right but the actual line is exceedingly worse. Fuck this movie.

After she died I asked myself what would be the best way to handle this. Could they do it between films? Explain it in the crawl, maybe start the movie with some sort a funeral scene where a main character gives a powerful memorial speech that inspires others to join the resistance. Would that be enough to push film forward? Would that be fair to audience and the plot?
I still don’t know the answer to those questions. But I do know they were brash enough not to just kill off a character between films and explain it in the crawl, but freaking bring a character back to life between films and explain it in the crawl and make said character the driving force of the entire movie. So just maybe it would’ve worked.

There's nothing I can say that hasn't already been said but I thought this was a train wreck. Can not believe where they went with Kylo and how they went about executing it. One of the most disappointing films I've seen in a long long time.

I understand people being disappointed in this movie, but putting it below any of the prequels is laughable and a massive reach.

I feel like, on a narrative level, she had to be in IX. Neither dying between films, nor being conspicuously of screen all film, would’ve felt satisfying. I’m very opposed to digital recreation both aesthetically & ethically (even the flashback here felt more like Tarkin in Rogue One than Leia in Rogue One), & recasting wouldn't have worked. But, using a little unused footage originally intended for Star Wars sequel trilogy films feels like the right choice. And, the specific idea of using an extra to have her die through the Force & impact Kylo was perfect, as much as the execution wasn’t.

Still, I don’t disagree w/ your description of her scenes. I would’ve used maybe a third of that, if that’s; just enough to establish her role in training Rey. (And, I would’ve had Luke’s ghost there, too, training her w/ Leia, so that the “Rey Skywalker” thing, which I love as an adoption narrative, would’ve actually made sense.)

I dunno. If there are gonna be non-Episode films, I think it's worth considering what makes Episodes I through IX a distinct series.

Which, you could argue there shouldn’t be an Episode VII through IX, & I wouldn’t have a problem w/ that. But, since I was a kid talking to my older brother about the rumored plans to make a sequel trilogy after the prequel trilogy wrapped up, I’ve always been interested in this series as a trilogy of trilogies. And, if that’s what it is, I think committing to the family element for those films while expanding a long time & a far distance away for other Star Wars stories.

Just realized this is the first Star Wars I am disappointed in on first release.

I was 12 when Ep 1 came out and I liked it, on through Ep 3. I started seeing the cracks by then, but I still liked them overall. Only later did their faults truly stand out to me.

here, I don’t get my youth and ignorance to comfort me during a deeply flawed movie. I’m depressed.

As far as things I DID like I enjoyed pretty much the entire sequence on the Death Star wreckage.

See, I didn’t like the dark Rey vision since the fight was shot super close and in the dark. I kind of wanted to see what that would have really looked like.

then Rey attacks Kylo in anger and kills him the first chance she gets. And no one seems to care about that.

so I don’t really care for that sequence.

although I did like the Han/Kylo scene after all that.

If I could just forget it

They should have led with an El Camino style movie where the old characters finish their stories and pass the torch to a new generation, including Ben, and then start the trilogy from there.
