finally watched The Director and The Jedi and Balance of the Force, what a great look inside an intriguing film. I wonder how many of those calling for this to be remade have given those any of their time.

I still hold empire supreme, but this could easily be my #2 any given day.

Empire has the best direction, cinematography, story, characters, etc... but this is definitely upper tier.

I just re-watched this. Still like it very much. The Mirror scene is still the one that confuses me. Not so much it being a mirror to Luke on Degobah with Vader, or even Anakin in the Cartoon and his vision, just more what the endless line of Reys is supposed to represent. Anyone got a thinkpeace they've read/written lol

I took it as a visual representation of a timeline in her lineage and that the fact that she only sees herself behind her and ahead of her that she has to come to terms that she grew up alone, will grow and go forward alone, and not have anyone else to depend on.

I saw another interpretation of it with regards to Luke, saying he's afraid of it not because it's the dark side, but because it's literally a mirror and he doesn't want to face the damage he created himself.

Yeah Idk why it doesnt work on mobile but does on computer. It wont let me paste the URL for some reason without the video taking its place. I just deleted the beginning "h" so try copying and pasting this link and just adding the "h" in front of it.

Agreed. And that whole concept applies to Poes arc as well which is something that those fans also hated because they were on Poe’s side the whole time. He was the big Resistance bad-ass hero and a fan favorite in TFA. Going against orders, recklessly attacking to defeat the enemy, and trying to be the hero is traditionally framed as a good thing in myth.

What he did in the opening scene was what heroes do and that is framed as weakness by Poe probably more than Luke’s situation and people not only hated it, but hated Holdo for being the character for calling him out and every traditional hero for that fact.

The concept also goes for Finn at the end. He disobeyed direct orders from Poe (who just learned the lesson) trying to be the hero and says “No! I won’t them win!” (Win being the operative word). People think that was the heroic thing to do and the traditional bad-ass heroic move, then Rose who the same people didn’t like, hated her even more for stopping that hero doing the badass thing and saying that winning isnt fighting what you hate but saving what you love.

The fact that those fans always say “that’s what he was trying to do!” Which I always hear, truly epitomizes that they don’t realize or accept that concept. (I can say that because when I first saw it I said the same thing and wanted him to sacrifice himself too lol) but they wouldn’t WIN because I don’t think he would’ve made it or would’ve stopped the canon anyways. the FO still outnumbered them. There was no “winning” against them. They lost and they lost early on. As Holdo said their mission was survival. That was winning.

During my rewatch I was struck by how they shifted Poe to Leia and then Finn to Poe in terms of their viewpoints on the true mission/survival vs. fighting.

I have to say that Empire is still #1 for me as well, but The Last Jedi is damn good and is a masterpiece and I could see it possibly taking the #2 slot from Star Wars [A New Hope] someday. Maybe. For me it is too soon and I simply haven't watched it enough times or spent enough time with it. The other films I have probably watched hundreds of times over the last 35 years and I've really only been able to sit down and watch TLJ all the way through with my total attention twice so far.

I still remember having surgery when I was middle school age-ish and when I was recuperating at home my grandmother bought me the Star Wars Trilogy on VHS, and they were the version where the sound and picture quality had been digitally cleaned up but no other changes had been made. This was before any of the Special Edition stuff. I so wish I still had those VHS tapes somewhere. I've gone searching a bunch of times through my parents attic and garage and found all sorts of old classic VHS tapes but never those.

Def ForceCenter and Full of Sith. I also like Blue Harvest, Steele Wars, and Skytalkers (they are all a little bit different but there are so many I imagine at least one of these is your style). Prob alone on this, but I also like some of the collector podcasts ha.
Binge Mode’s SW episodes are pretty great and I like /FilmDaily as well but those are more pop culture oriented.

    I do not exist.

This is such a deep film and that's why I enjoy it. There's so much meaning behind every decision. I still think it could have been executed slightly better in places, but I definitely think Rian Johnson has done a great job with it.

I guess with where we are at in the world I should not have been surprised at all, but I honestly truly thought that after the prequel trilogy Star Wars fans would have been ecstatic to get a film that is written, directed and acted well even if they didn't agree with every story choice and creative decision that was made.

I honestly HATED The Last Jedi as it played out the first time I watched it. Everything that was happening felt wrong and silly and stupid and forced. The only thing I can compare it to is Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy where I disagree with almost every single creative decision that they made and it honestly astounds me that they could film the story being told but seemingly miss the entire point at almost every single juncture. But as the film played out it slowly won me over. By the point where Rey & Kylo Ren are fighting the red guards in Snoke's throne room I had started to be on board with what was happening without even realizing it. By the time Luke walked out onto the white sand to face Kylo Ren in front of the line of First Order walkers Rian Johnson had fully won me over. I was completely engrossed in the story being told and not nit-picking every little thing that was happening on screen.

Are there still things in The Last Jedi that drive me crazy? Yes. Are there things that I think are really stupid and would have done differently myself? Absolutely. But I think it is a masterpiece nonetheless. To me it is a minor miracle that a filmmaker was able to preserve his vision so strongly through the entire current Hollywood-blockbuster/Lucas Film-Star Wars behemoth that seems to exist almost singularly to suck risk and creativity away and sand down any rough edges or anything that might make audiences uncomfortable to the point where films are only money-making vessels .
