I’ve rewatched it twice since home release now and that was a fact that immediately stood out to me after reading nothing but Canto hate for 3+ months. It definitely got built up in my mind as something bigger than it is. My feelings towards that scene have hanged drastically since my first viewing.

If we're going with this type of comparison, this would be the most accurate in my opinion.

    1. People forget that JJ said that he saw the script and gushed that he wish he was directing it. I get he can’t say it’s awful but he could’ve just said I liked it.

    2. In response to Simon Peggs thing and rian not using anything JJ planned, people think JJs vision for the trilogy must have been incredible because reasons. Hans death imo was underwhelming. I loved TFA but there was nothing in that movie that was extraordinarily amazing/iconic imo or something I’d consider one of the best SW moments. Just because JJ wrote treatments doesn’t mean they were good.

    3. I think Rians creativity pushed the borders of SWs passed what it was and will inspire JJ to think more creatively and continue expand SW and make episode 9 10x better than anything he originally planned.

IDK, a lot of the “woke” moments in TLJ were ideas about the force/Jedi that Star Wars fans have played with for years. I don’t think there was a single revelation in TLJ that I haven’t already read on a message board.

I still don't even think Canto Bight is that bad. It's not amazing, but outside of the lame way they get captured and the chase scene that is about 1 minute too long, there's nothing I would say I downright hate.

Ok finally watched this. I honestly really enjoyed it. The only storyline that seemed unnecessary was Finn & Rose at that casino, which it sounds like a lot of people really had a problem with.

My only criticism I guess would be that this didn't really further the plot too much for the trilogy. I also thought it was kind of odd that they had been hinting in TFA about Rey's parents being some big mystery, but it turns out they were nobody special?

I think it's because Johnson cared more about shocking/tricking the audience. If people weren't expecting Rey's parents to be revealed then he would have revealed them.

Ya that’s just not true. He said all of the character decisions were strictly based off of what would be the hardest situation each character has to go through. He said it would be easy for rey to hear her parents were somebody special and she has a place in the story. It was harder for her to hear she’s nobody and has to create her own place

    I do not exist.

I don't care who her parents are or anything like that but I would like to know why she was keeping a tally (presumably of days?) on Jakku!

We don't know anything else about this do we? Not read any of the books yet.

In story, Because she was waiting and counting the days for her family to come back. It’s to show how long she has been there for the audience. To show that she has been here, alone, for a very long time. That’s all it was.

    Snoke dead

    Luke/Kylo backstory revealed

Rey’s parents revealed and acquired the Jedi texts

    Luke dead

    Resistance decimated

    Poe evolves to a leader

    Finn stops running

Idunno that’s some major shit right there ^^

And Rey finally has her family now, isnt relying on anybody else like Han, Luke, or Ben to save the galaxy so she stole the Jedi texts top teach herself, and my favorite thing. Kylo takes over the First Order which still baffles me. Im still waiting for somebody to give me a show/movie where his archetype ever actually kills the big baddy and takes over.

It's hilarious because the reason people hate the Canto Bite scene so much is because of all the CGI but if they watched the documentary they'd realize that most of everything there is a practical effect. I remember the "outrage" over them using a CGI Yoda in the Yoda scene only for people to later realize they did a 1:1 recreation of the Yoda from Empire in puppet form. People won't be satisfied.

  16. It's fine to not like the movie or parts of the movie but to say that the director only cared about shocking or tricking the audience just because you didn't like something is some wacky mental gymnastics.

I think its unfair to say people hate it JUST because the CGI. Theres a lot of complaints Ive read. People bring up the inconsistent tone, the dialogue, the lack of impact on the plot, the on-the-nose/forced messages that had no relevance to the story, the parking violation, the coincidence of finding DJ in the cell/not being the codebreaker but still being able the person they need.

I think the CGI complaint is isolated to the the fathiers chase. I actually dont think its unreasonable for people to dislike the Canto Bight stuff. I think its fun and thematically has some of the most important stuff in the movie, but I actually agree with a handful of those arguments, I just think some people are going overboard with the prequel comparisons and how awful it is, especially only being 10 minutes.

If anything it reminds me more of fantastic beasts or something youd see in harry potter than the prequels.

That’s comforting. I just imagined Johnson intentionally doing what audiences didn’t expect due to the entire movie doing that. Not that it’s a bad thing, it’s just what I pictured in my head.

    Things have changed.

Basically saying "your opinion is stupid because you haven't watched the 130-minute companion piece available with the home video release" is pretty pretentious.

No one is saying that. A user said Rian only wanted to shock fans when Rian has stated plenty what his intent was. It’s not about opinion and no one suggested anyone was “stupid”. It’s true though. If someone said that it would be incredibly pretentious, but no one in this thread did that.

I don't even think it's that pretentious to recommend someone watch the documentary if they have a problem with something in the movie that might be better explained if they watched the documentary. If they still have the same opinion after that's fine, but i don't think it borders on pretentious to suggest they see it. anyone who has bought a dvd or got the digital has access to it.

Yea for clarity, it’s the calling someone stupid that’s pretentious haha

    Things have changed.

Saying "It's hilarious that people have X opinion because if they'd only done all this other research and watched a 2-plus hour documentary, they'd understand their opinion is wrong" is absurd.

People are allowed to have opinions on things without consuming every available piece of parallel content.

Why bother putting something in quotes if you don’t actually quote them verbatim but choose to mischarscterize their statement? Also, why is this a battle you’re choosing to have lol

I get what you’re saying, but it also kind of comes as uninformed and ill thought out opinions should be just accepted. I find that part of it offensive, tbh.
