Id actually really like that. It definitely needs to be painted more of a tragedy. One of the many things I love about TLJ was that last scene of Kylo looking up at Rey before they leave. Once Rey closes the door on him and the dice fades away losing the family he could've had he turned I think in that moment he regrets the path he chose but he cant go back. Unlike probably most villains in history, hes shown to have a heart. He doesnt kill Leia, he legit cares about Rey, the protagonist, and he wants to have a family.

The thing Im worried about is the plot and what the main threat is going to be. They already did 3 Death Stars. For the conclusion of a trilogy, I hope they dont just try to find the next galaxy wide threat that will destroy everything, not only because that will be lame, but I think it kind of erases the development of Kylo that he in fact isnt just the monster that he wants to be.

Apparently, Trevorrow fought to have Luke Skywalker remain alive in Episode IX and strongly disagreed with the character being killed off by director Rian Johnson in The Last Jedi.

Trevorrow also had big plans for Luke and Leia's relationship and was planning to explore her links to the Force in a "beautiful and tragic" way. He also wanted Supreme Leader Snoke to stay alive in order to explore the villain's backstory and would have ended the trilogy with Luke essentially walking off into the sunset. Unfortunately for the director, Johnson and Kathleen Kennedy were adamant he die.

"I had discussions with Colin. I was very excited because we were on the same page in terms of where we wanted to go and how we wanted to see Luke in a way that we never seen him. Even in this current version. But I don't know what went on. I don't want to know because there is no upside to that story. I like all those people. I like Kathy, and I like Lawrence Kasdan and all the people involved in that decision, but sometimes ignorance is bliss. And they don't tell me anything."

Mark Hamill once again shares how he preferred another take on Luke other than the version Johnson gave us.

I want Kylo to go to the furthest depths of his humanity in the next one, truly become and embrace the villain that people hoped he was. He really has nothing left to lose anymore

And it still makes me sad the people disagree with Luke's "death". You may not like the choice, but it was a beautiful, thematically resonant, and satisfying (in a nuanced way - which is where most people lose it) conclusion to his story and his arc

    Claims somebody on Reddit lol

Cant wait for all the hot takes about how Colin would've made a masterpiece from the same people that probably ripped apart Jurassic World as well. I liked Jurassic World for what it is, but if his Star Wars was anything as hollow as Jurassic, then thank god Kathleen got JJ back.

There are 2/2.5 hours left in this trilogy and I want to spend 0 time on character backstories now. This trilogy also isn't about Luke/Leia, so I don't particularly need to see any of that "exploration" either. There are so many good newer characters that need to be focused on in the final installment of this trilogy. The more I read the more I'm glad Trevorrow is out. Assuming what is quoted is accurate, not meaning any slight to the poster.

Yeah, cuz you can totally get that from what he said. I hate TLJ trolls.

How else would you translate Mark stating that he agreed with someone who wrote a version of Luke that ended 100% different than Johnson’s version? That he preferred Johnson’s version?

Let’s not be naive. This isn’t the first time Mark has expressed this sort of stuff. It’s okay to admit that one of the actors in the movie wasn’t as down with the material as all of the other actors were. It won’t affect the quality of the film. We shouldn’t need the Hamill seal of approval.

I would have taken either version of Luke. Luke was never my favorite character so I don’t care if dead Luke is canon or alive Luke is canon. The post doesn’t mention anything about the quality of the screenplay he wrote but I would bet money that it was garbage.

Because just because you like a direction for the character doesn't mean you can't agree with another direction. He's said multiple times that while he was hesitant at first about this take on Luke, he came around to it, a comment that seems to be willfully ignored by TLJ trolls.

Eh. As somebody who loves TLJ , Im going to have to disagree. Mark's said enough in interviews recently to convince me he really didn't like the direction for Luke at all.

“I said to Rian, ‘Jedis don’t give up.’ I mean, even if [Luke] had a problem, he would maybe take a year to try and regroup, but if he made a mistake, he would try and right that wrong, so right there, we had a fundamental difference.

But it’s not my story anymore, it’s somebody else’s story and Rian needed me to be a certain way to make the ending effective. That’s the crux of my problem. Luke would never say that. I’m sorry.”

“Well, in this version…see, I’m talking about the George Lucas Star Wars, this is the next generation of Star Wars. I almost had to think of Luke as another character. Maybe he’s ‘Jake Skywalker,’ he’s not my Luke Skywalker. But I had to do what Rian wanted me to do because it serves the story well. Listen, I still haven’t accepted it completely, but, it’s only a movie. I hope people like it. I hope they don’t get upset. I came to really believe that Rian was the exact man they needed for this job.”

We cant get into Mark's head to know exactly, but I personally think he really didnt like the writing for Luke at all, which is unfortunate. I dont think he despises TLJ as a movie or Rian or anything though. He just has a huge attachment to the character, as a lot do. I see why he and people dont like it too, but I personally love it. Rian made Luke the Jedi who actually realize the faults and vanity of their religion. He understands the duality of the Force more than anybody.

He’s said it multiple times, though. Where there’s smoke, there’s fire. At most, it seems like Mark understands why Johnson wrote Luke the way he did and why it’s necessary for the story but, he doesn’t favor it or see it as his ideal Luke.

Also, can you use “troll” when it’s appropriate and not just when you’re addressing a different viewpoint? Trolling suggests that there isn’t actual conversation to be had and it’s just for sport.

I use troll when talking about people who use an actor's comments and opinions as "proof" that the movie sucks, the type of people who go hunting for meaningless tidbits to validate their opinions so they can compile them and use to show how right they are to hate the film. I certainly don't mean anyone who dislikes the movie.

Edit: But I'm realizing I made quite a few assumptions from that one sentence that weren't necessarily true, so I apologize. I guess I've seen so much toxic fandom that I see it in places it doesn't exist, and I'm sorry

You’re good. Lol I certainly don’t think the film sucks nor would I suggest that Hamill’s thoughts represent the quality of the story itself. As far as Luke goes, I think his treatment (regardless if it’s favorable or not) was necessary to the story that episode 8 told.

I edited together the ending of TFA with the beginning of TLJ to make a 5 hour movie for my own viewing pleasure and it’s pretty awesome.

-I cut right after the hood removal in TFA into TLJ when rey walks up to him before the handoff.

    - I then let It run until kylo says “prepare my ship!” and cut to the evacuation and bomber battle

-when Finn says “Wheres rey?” I cut back to the island but not the beginning scene, the next one where luke is resting on the step.

Finally. FINALLY got around to seeing this last night. Loved it. Not more than Force Awakens or Rogue One, but I loved it. Picking up the blu-ray for sure.

Started watching a video on what was wrong with it because I haven't (for obvious reasons) been following any of the fallout. One of his first arguments against the film was the "purple haired feminist archetype". Turned that noise off.
