    Jumanji was bad.

The original was better in every way.

I like the Ringer, but saying it's "crushing" The Last Jedi strikes me as lazy and click-bait. Right off the bat it's factually incorrect:
It's release date was the weekend after. Pretty easy to fact check that one.

The Jumanji success isn't as unpredictable as a lot of media outlets are making it out to be. It's kind of similar to Jurassic World. The perfect time to hit viewers who saw the original when they were pre-teens or younger and tap into their nostalgic feelings. Plus it has two very marketable stars in Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart.

The surprising part maybe that it's stayed at the top for a few weeks now. It's January, so outside of the prestige pictures, there is pretty much nothing else besides this and Star Wars. And pretty much everyone who was going to see Star Wars goes to see it by the 2nd weekend. So if their looking for a fun adventure film to take the family too, this is going to win out. Though, to be fair, the article does at least talk about the January blockbuster drop off a bit.

    I do not exist.

Biggest achievement of the year so far? Catching up with this thread! It took a while... I saw the film for the first time on December 31st but thought I wouldn't post my opinions until I'd read what everyone else here thought.

Overall I enjoyed the film but it did feel a bit long. I think this film had some of the best Star Wars moments ever (particularly visually - Crait in particular), but it also felt a bit jumpy in places. For this reason I probably preferred The Force Awakens. But this was a welcome second story and I eagerly await the final chapter.

In terms of characters, I loved what they did with Luke and I felt his story made sense and I could relate to what he went through - I really don't understand the aggression against Johnson for this. The interactions between Luke and Rey and then Kylo and Rey's whole story was perfect. I honestly had no idea what would happen. I did not expect Snoke to die and I hadn't got a clue there would be a Yoda cameo.

I loved Rose and Finn but I felt like their story was lacking. I understand how Finn's arc makes sense, I just think it could have been executed better. I loved them and their interactions as characters so that made up for it. I was surprised to not enjoy BDT's performance - the stutter was off putting and didn't feel 'right'. I never thought I wouldn't enjoy a performance by him.

The Poe/Holdo/Leia story was engaging. Holdo's big moment of sacrifice was beautiful, breathtaking and brilliant. Another highlight. Like many I found the 'Leia in space' graphics a bit jarring but in the moment when she was just floating I thought "oh man, this is it, they've actually changed the story, written her out - this is her farewell and she won't wake up" so I was caught up in the emotion of it all and let it slide. It was emotional. It was great to see her use the force in that way too. I was surprised when she woke up as that was a perfect opportunity to give her a fitting onscreen farewell - but her interaction with Luke at the end was touching and worth it.

    Also, Porgs. I loved them.

One of the things I love about these new Star Wars films is that my wife likes them. She'd never seen a SW film before The Force Awakens. I convinced her to come and she loved it. We both enjoyed Rogue One and we enjoyed this one. She did say this one felt a bit longer but she enjoyed it overall. (I'm still working on the Original Trilogy with her).

Same with my wife. These last three films have been her introduction to SW, and it’s been neat whatching these with her.

Novelization will include scenes not seen in the movie such as Han’s funeral, Paige and Rose together, and more w/ Canto Bight. I love how enthusiastic Rian is about the novelization.
Also, they show a bit of one of the deleted scenes between Rey, Luke, and the caretakers. Finally, they show an advert at the end for the novelization as well as the physical release, stating “with filmmaker commentary” so it looks like we won’t have to double dip?

It doesn’t look like it’s up on the podcast feeds yet, but /Filmcast talked with Rian for almost two hours. The livestream link is still available so I would check it out. It’s a fun listen.

I just realized that one of the quick shots from the trailer I was most looking forward to seeing in full was Rey running full-sprint with her lightsaber activated, and I think that was the only shot from the trailer not in the movie. At least we'll get it as a deleted scene? But yeah, after reading the description of that scene I'm sort of glad they left it out.

    “The greatest teacher, failure is”

I wouldn’t say I’m glad but I understand. They were already on a path with luke that many fans hated. I think the lesson/message and sticking with the vision is more important though. I doubt it’s a “bad” scene. From what I’ve heard it was mostly taken out because it paints luke in an even darker way. That line from this where Rey says something like you hate your legend but I believe(d) in it I think would’ve been worth it in the context of the story and seeing it for the first time.

Hard to judge without the scene and in the end we will see it/read it so not a huge deal.

Also something I think I would’ve liked to see and actually disappointed that we didn’t get in retrospect is Rey simply acknowledging Luke facing the First Order at the end and coming to help.

She helps save the ski speeders then she’s in the salt caves losing the TIEs, and then she appears to save the group but it’s never shown her realizing or even knowing Luke was on Crait and facing down the order like he said he wouldn’t earlier. Would’ve been nice to see her fly over and smile seeing him or even Luke telling her telepathically he’s stalling and to save the rebellion.

All we have is that she knew he died with peace and purpose. Anybody agree/disagree?

I'd actually be okay with seeing Luke taken in an even darker direction; Luke's arc as it stands was my favorite part of the whole movie. I just think this scene in particular would've been a slightly goofy way for him to teach Rey her third lesson.

I saw this for a third time last night, and it's gotten better for me with each re-watch. So today thought I'd try my hand at drafting some hypothetical opening crawls for Episode 9. I've written a couple different ones but I can't get around the fact that Leia pretty much needs to die right off the bat. I feel bad for killing her offscreen, but I just can't see any other way around it. How does everyone think Leia will be handled in Ep. 9?

We reach for the longest shadow

If it picked up with people reuniting after a couple years for Leia's funeral, that would be cool. Where would they even hold a service for her at this point though?

Is Naboo still not destroyed? I think her birth mother's homeworld would be appropriate, and sort of cool to see a very brief return to.

Well Han’s funeral is in TLJ novelization. I’d assume next to him. We should get a location in that.

Ooooo what if Ben ends up in front of their grave at some point. That’s be an awesome shot

I would love that and for me, it would be a step in the right direction after they missed so many chances to let her go out like a hero instead of now having her die or disappear off screen.
