You’re the only person I have heard say something like that about that moment.

I didn't personally think it was quite hilariously bad, but I do remember thinking the whole spinning shot was pretty overblown. Simply ending with them making eye contact and her taking out the lightsaber would've been better.

Maybe wishing that moment were more understated made me appreciate TLJ turning that into a literal throwaway joke more.

I think there's truth to this, based on some of my movie-discussing experience. And I always enjoy hearing a woman's perspective of a film. But, as someone who really doesn't like Hillary, seeing a movie I loved compared to her kinda bums me out, lol.

"Dramatic" =/= "over dramatic." Simply dropping the lightsaber would've been dramatic, though maybe understated would be a better term. But, I'm certainly not proposing some big, melodramatic action, with a Vertigo zoom and whatnot.

I personally don't care how audiences reacted. I'm not saying it was a big laugh moment or was going for one, and I also don't care what other people like when deciding what I like or what is good. I simply know that I really dug the moment as is for a variety of reasons.

Speaking of not caring about what people like, I'm really happy with myself calling that scene a "literal throwaway joke," and if nobody else finds that funny, I'll still be happy with it.

so my friend invited me to his facebook group chat he's in for Star Wars with some of his buddies... omg. it was so bad, i left within minutes.

    reasons they hate TLJ:
    • it was based on "hoodwinks" (Rey's parents). the word hoodwink must have been a new one for them, because they were lathering it on thick. i argue that Ben telling Luke that Vader killed his father was a hoodwink, as was the reveal that Vader was his father, am met with "yeah but at least those hoodwinks resulted in something"
    • they don't get how Snoke knew anything about Rey. because she is force sensitive, you fucks.
    • "they ruined Hux", couldn't get a lick of clarification on that
    • one guy is convinced that Rey is Kylo's sister and that everything else is a misdirect. he thinks this is a good thing, btw.
    • the fucking gravity in space thing
the last thing i read before leaving, and i quote: "I am so sick of reading off my list of reasons why this movie was actual shit, but I'm even more sick of the 2-3 ways everyone goes about defending it"

then stop, you grown ass 32 year old human being.

Honestly I’ve found this movie isn’t really worth discussing with the detractors. Every time you try to engage in a meaningful discussion the other side just ends up going “well the movie made me THROW UP because it’s BAD”
    Uh thanks?

i just love the mindset of "i hate this movie so much i paid to see it 5 times, but it's Disney that's the problem!"

I kinda feel it's a little un-fair to nit pick specific scenes because they don't "hold up" on repeat viewings, I mean diminishing returns are a real thing so obviously stuff is going to be have lessened impact.

I thought Luke throwing the lightsaber over his shoulder was much better than the brush off the shoulders move, IMO.

Yeah, the crowd on my opening night was great, cheering/laughing at all the right times, and that got a good laugh, but I can't imagine it getting that same type of reaction watching it at home.

yeah I think watching these sort of movies at home by yourself isn't the right way to go about it.

it's like listening to Slayer silently.

Ill agree but lets be fair Ive also seen our side be equally as dismissive just saying "well you just dont get it" or making excuses for everything for every little thing and over-rationalizing. Lets be honest there are good reasons people dont like this movie and the decisions in it. There are definitely bad arguments too (as weve seen) but as always, its how people express them. But yeah when people say “well the movie made me THROW UP because it’s BAD”, or "Rian ruined Star Wars" etc... Thats the worst and probably not worth trying to engage in a conversation.

I agree with you on both points but most people just have a knee jerk reaction and then that's that. it's just not really worth it to engage. Like you're going to change their mind? lol

  22. ...So did you get to the part where the article says it's about gender?

honestly that was a pretty good article even though I disagree with the overarching premise, the points she makes are spot on and super well observed. the part about escape vs glory was spot on.

also, it's 2018, do we still have to bring Hillary Clinton into every conversation? lol

I don't think so, I think Star Wars can be enjoyed at home just as much as any other movie. That was just one instance where it felt like it was playing to a huge theater audience, and it wouldn't have the same feeling unless it was in the theater with a lot of other Star Wars fans.

I personally try to catch these event movies as early as possible precisely because I think having a crowd greatly increases the experience. That said I’m pining for a 4K TLJ Blu-ray.
