I want a still from a few frames before that, but that still gets me hyped every time I look at it

After it sitting for a few weeks and 4 viewings total so far...

The one moment that just does not work for me at all is the saber being thrown over the shoulder. It just doesn’t feel right on any level.

Agreed 100%. I laughed the first time but each time after I like it less and less. It really didn’t fit with his expression in TFA. In TFA he’s like “you’ve got to be kidding me”. In the last Jedi he’s like “hmm. Whatever.”

I kind of wish he didn’t take it from Rey at all. Rey wants him to take it and be the legend she’s heard of and he doesn’t even want to touch it. She puts it out for him to take it again after they fight and he doesn’t take it then.

He also should’ve said something imo. Like “I don’t want that thing” or “take it and leave this island”.

That's the only thing that didn't sit well with you throughout that entire movie?

I never laughed at it during any viewing. It does seem to go for a laugh of some type and while I can’t recall the first 3 crowds reaction, my viewing last week was dead silent for that moment.

It could have been worse, I guess. It’s reallt the straight faced throw over the shoulder that just doesn’t work to me. An expression closer to the end of TFA and then simply dropping it would have felt better even. Or handing it back. Everything else could stay the same, just take the throw with a straight face out.

Pretty much. That’s not to say I love everything else. But there is stuff to enjoy in all the Canto Bite moments, even if it’s narratively pointless. There is more going on beyond that.

This moment just clunks at every viewing.

TLJ is really recontextualizing TFA in my first watch through since seeing TLJ

  9. Finally saw this today. While there were things that maybe I would personally change, overall I loved it. Absolutely loved the third act. Can’t wait till it’s available to watch at home.

I don't mind the over the shoulder saber throw. Sure, it probably would have been better if he just dropped it or refused to take it, but I don't hate it. I'm assuming he's throwing it over he shoulder so it can go over the cliff and into the sea.

It just doesn’t work for me at all. It doesn’t really make sense. He sees a saber he lost 40 years ago and is totally straight faced about it and tosses it in a “humorous” way?

It doesn’t really add up in story or for the character.

I totally agree that it could have been executed better (I love the movie, but you can say that about about quite a few aspects of the film), but it hasn't bothered me any of the times I watched it.

It’s a very quick moment, and I think Luke rejecting Rey and the saber makes perfect sense. But man did they pick such a dumb way to show that. If I ever meet RJ I would blab on for hours about what I love, then I would slowly be like, “with all of that said, I gotta know, what the hell is up with the toss over the shoulder thing? Like, what in the hell?”

Like, that was truly the first thing we see Luke do since ROTJ. It really undercuts that moment with such a silly way of rejecting Rey.

Could not agree more. There are so many ways I'd have rather seen that interaction go.

It really stands out as a poor choice on each viewing. Luckily I think every other Luke moment is damn near perfection.

See, I love how comical and dismissive that moment is, but I also wouldn't argue that something more dramatic would've been a bit better. That sort of borderline disrespect for the final dramatic moments of The Force Awakens just really works for my sensibilities, lol. If I were more of a Star Wars fan, I'd probably be upset by it, but as is, it honestly brings me joy.

Didn't bother me really. Felt like Rian Johnson telling the fanboys "fuck your Snoke theories and Luke wish-casting."

I remember you guys mentioning that on the podcast but I guess I never noticed how bad/dramatic the hood thing is. I'll have to go watch TFA again lol

I actually didnt mind that. Mostly because hes looking at Kylos ship and I see it as him trying to piss Kylo off and make him come down. It also reminds me when he has his one hand behind his back fighting Rey. Just toying with his students.

I feel like there was enough of that in the movie. Plus having him not take the saber and tell her to leave would still have that same effect. They probably did a number of takes and I wouldnt be surprised if they left it in there so they could get the shot of the Porg almost getting stabbed.

Just wish they wouldve toned down the comedy a bit in general. I feel like they felt the movie was going to be too dark/serious if they didnt, but I think they overcompensated a bit.

That’s fine. I don’t love it, but it very much fits with what Luke wants to accomplish there. It’s an embellishment to his final legend. As well, it would anger Ben and further narrow his focus only to Luke.

Let’s say that’s 100% the truth, which I don’t think RJ hates the fans in that way, that still doesn’t make it work within the story or context of the character. If it’s only for that purpose , it falls flat within the story.

It didn’t need to be more dramatic. As I said above, he could have merely dropped it and everything else could play exactly the same.

I think it fails as a joke for most audiences, at least the four I’ve been in for it. Has anyone had a theater all/largely react to humor with this? While I am sure some people laugh, I would assume most people are silent during that moment.
