    not dead yet.

I'm torn between wanting Rey to be related to Luke, and her not being related and just being a very strong force-sensitive person who will "bring balance to the force."

It's all about the Skywalkers. It's always been about them, I don't see this being any different...

That's very true. And that's why I feel they are headed in the related direction. Either way, I'm still stoked about this Episode.

    Fight the long defeat.

Rey as Luke's daughter seems far too predictable, and I'm not crazy about she and Kylo relating as cousins; a glorified sibling rivalry has been done a thousand times in movies.

Not that I have a great reason to put behind that feeling, just that if your big secret is confirmed in accordance with everyone's gut reaction after seeing TFA, the complexity of and interest in your plot declines. It's too easy.

That said, if they chose to go that route, I'm confident Rian Johnson can pull it off. I think this will be a great movie in any case.

I agree with all of this. If Rey turns out to be Luke's daughter it will be the 4th time in the Star Wars franchise that they go to the "so and so is related to so and so" well (5th if you count the implication that Palpatine "created" Anakin in Ep 3 as a familial reveal).

Right. It's a little played out, but as stated before, the entire saga is a Skywalker story. Who knows which direction they are going to go with this movie.

I've been firmly in camp "Rey isn't Luke's daughter" but there is one thing that makes me think that despite how obvious that would be, it could be the case: Daisy Ridley saying that Rey's parentage isn't a big deal. So maybe they know everybody's guessed it and it won't be some huge reveal. I dunno.

I think I want Rey to be cousins or related in some way to Kylo just to mirror Jacen and Jaina Solo. I loved them so much.

Ugh I forgot that Anakin was "created." Was it really by Palpatine? I must've missed that part, but it makes me hate that plot point even more than it already did.

I don't remember Anakin ever being "created" besides being of the force..?

Well, if I remember correctly, when Palpatine was telling Anakin about his master Plageius, he mentioned that Plageius knew how to make midichlorians "create life". When he said "create life" he turned to Anakin and raised his eyebrow. I took that to mean that Palpatine created Anakin using his master's lessons.

But it was never made explicit.

To me that just was his ploy to get Anakin on his side so he might be able to save Padame.

Definitely didn't take it that way..? But who knows.

Any way you look at it, Anakin being created is just awful.

This quote from Wookiepedia should clear things up: "In addition, although Darth Plagueis did attempt to influence the midichlorians to create the ultimate Sith weapon alongside Darth Sidious, the experiment was ultimately a failure, and the midichlorians, sensing the Sith's inherent malevolent intention, not only refused to do so, but in retaliation, conceived Anakin Skywalker in order to destroy the Sith once and for all."

Now, this isn't necessarily cannon, but I think it offers the best explanation we have so far. I believe the Plagueis novel had several elements that refuted the theory and, although this novel is part of the Legends now, there are parts that were subsequently canonized in the Tarkin novel.

  16. I think Shmi Skywalker was just a super proud single mom who didn't want to give a deadbeat who ran off any credit. The virgin birth theory is just too contrived and awful to believe.
