So then why are we comparing this split with The Clash and Pixies? Splits we’ve had decades to analyze pre/post. SK has literally no output post Janet. Seems like people are reaching to be dramatic. A great drummer no doubt about it. But I’m also not going to underrate Carrie and Corin.

People flipped when Rostam left VW and FotB is one of the best records of the year yet how was VW ever going to carry on without Rostam.

 

Janet played such an unique role in S-K. Obviously you know this but without a bassist her role in band is essential she's the backbone holding down that low end all on her own. Obviously Carrie and Corin will continue to make great music. Carrie and Janet did years ago in Wild Flag.

It's like if Greenwood left Radiohead etc etc - it's still the same band technically but it's really not.

 

I mean listen to Call The Doctor and Dig Me Out and you'll hear how different and unique Janet made this band. She played with such power and melody and just by listening to her drum work you immediately know it's a S-K song.

anyways if there is a band that can find another great drummer it is Carrie and Corin. whew I'm going through a lot of feelings today. this sucks.

 

I’m not saying it’s not a big deal. It is. What I’m balking at is the talk I’ve seen around social media that 1. The band will be unable to make great music moving forward (ie Pixies/Clash comparisons) 2. The new record is trash because Janet doesn’t like the new direction.

Both of those thought processes are absurd.

I understand what you’re saying about her unique style and the power of her drumming. But I’m always about moving forward, and if this is the way for both parties involved, so be it.

 

oh well I don't agree with those social media takes. while I don't think it's Sleater-Kinney anymore I still think the new record will be great and whatever Carrie and Corin decide to do next will be great.

Laura Snapes is one of the few writers I’ve seen who have the actual record, and she’s been saying for weeks now that it’s incredible, FWIW.

Music fandom: it’s actually really bad

 

feels like we're back in 1993 with some of the "janet left because they went pop which is bad fuck synths" takes I've seen from some people online

 

shut the fuck up man - I can be emotional about one of my 3 favorite bands ever losing their drummer. I never said they would be bad going forward and that it's just not the same band to me personally. fuck.

 

i mean this in terms of attaching drama to the members and annie that we have no real evidence of and really fickle stuff like that. also making snotty jokes. things that aren’t really fair to anyone

 

I sincerely hope you love the follow up to the next album just as much as anything they’ve done with janet in the band

lots of feelings. sad about janet leaving, happy she's doing what she wants. sad carrie's sad, happy she still seems energized about the band.
