"Naturally, the way female bodies were presented culturally as objects to be looked at had an effect on women, on the way they came to see themselves – as a sight, a vision. In the words which opened this article, Berger pins down a feeling which, although perhaps not universal, is familiar to many, many women. It comes with adolescence – maybe the first time a man yells at you from a moving car – and is the sense of living life one step removed, living as your own spectator. You are never yourself, you are yourself as you appear to others. To men, yes, and to the women with whom you are supposed to compete for their attention."

Why we still need John Berger’s Ways of Seeing

Pretty depressing that the most positive thing in this thread is tactics for women to discreetly avoid violent men

I love this. It's a great argument for all the people who try to justify being pro-forced birth as "you're murdering a person!"

I mean, I tried a couple of times, even back on APnet, to link to some fun and positive stuff that was created by women, but it was just largely ignored by everyone. So I stopped. Much like this post by Matt >> https://forum.chorus.fm/posts/737219 being to no avail as well (literally got nothing new in our inbox). So it's just better to not do anything or have any discussion honestly. At least for me.

I have a question! i always come to these threads for these type of questions...i actually find it quite helpful.

Okay so in a nutshell, my question is, can a WOMAN be too...hmm, I dont know how to say it...too full of herself as a feminist? I know we've discussed how men-feminists do this all the time, but I'm wondering if you think women can fall into that same category as well. I'm in a comedy writing class where a woman is constantly talking about how much of a "super feminist" she is. Sort of in that "i'm better than everyone in this class" kind of tone. "Ugh, well, im actually like a big time feminist, so sorry in advance if all my sketches are about that", and everyone in the rooms okay, okay thats great, write what you want. But she says a sentence similar to that multiple times every class and i'm just thinking...what the hell? This is a super liberal environment and we're okay if you want to write with that type of slant, but i dont know, i feel like its rubbing people the wrong way.

Yesterday we were writing in class and out-loud she was like, "hmm what's a list of things men do that's annoying" and another girl in class tried to point out that feminism isn't only about hating men. And she said "I never claimed I was a feminist" and we're all like, YES YOU DID. AHHH

So again, I don't think she's a "fake feminist" like many men claim to be, but do you think a woman feminist can be too full of herself? I know that's not the right word to use, but, do you think her attitude is fine...justified... I haven't said anything to her because I'm man and I don't want to make it sound like i'm mansplaining things. In a way I feel like it puts down the other women in the class or any other woman who DOESNT full out say these things.

    Comments, advice?

  15. Women can be hypocrites. Women can be jerks. Women can be obnoxious. Women can be just about anything. It has nothing to do with feminism, even if that's what she's calling it. If she wasn't a ~feminist~, you can bet these behaviors would manifest themselves anyway.

It's probably not worth getting into. If other women want to take her to task, fine - you can try addressing it with the teacher privately, but otherwise I've been in classes with people like that and the best course of action is to grit your teeth and get through the semester. Confrontation typically doesn't help, especially in this context. Just remember not to conflate her behavior with the ideals of feminism because that's a whole different can of worms, and that being The Worst is not a gender specific thing.

Some of the most condescending things I've heard in my life came from dude musicians while I was a percussion performance major in college. Ugh.
