Very powerful message. In reference to the last of the series, it is far too easy for a victim's support system to break down after an assault and give way to isolation. In contrast to the constantly-exercised limits of our individual and aggregate empathy and sympathy, the luxury and distance of time are not afforded to victims.

 

Harasser guy has been suspended for 2 weeks and not allowed to be near me. If he needs something someone else has to get it for him. Very good news.

I'm not sure if anyone remembers the nurses manager that was giving me a hard time a while back he stopped after he got in trouble and we're actually friendly with each other. This dude isn't going to react like that so I'll keep everyone updated.

I have to change somehow. I must be putting myself in the wrong situations somehow where this can occur. I just feel kind of sad bc obviously I'm doing something wrong.

 

It isn't your fault. Their attitudes and behaviour are to blame here, not yours.

 

Tough to think that when friends and coworkers keep asking me what I've done to make him think it's ok and I must be the problem if it keeps happening. I've always been taught to just laugh off these situations and ever since I've started being vocal about it I'm getting shit on. I'm just really, really sad.

 

It's not you, if you hear it is from a million different people it changes nothing of the reality that it isn't and never was.

 

I get the same feeling a lot, like I know when stuff like that happens that it's not my fault, but then get lost down the thought-hole of "well, if I hadn't done x or said y, maybe they wouldn't have thought z was okay." And then when you tell another person and they're like "wow, you did x? you said y? no wonder z happened! what did you expect?"... that doesn't exactly make it easy to think that things aren't somehow your fault.

But they still aren't. One of my favorite books that I read as a kid had a quote about this - "The person who commits an action is the one responsible for it, not the people he commits the action upon." Friends and coworkers can try to justify it any way they like, but that doesn't change the fact that you aren't responsible for the things that other people do. If any of those dudes harassing you weren't bothering you, they'd find someone else to bother or some other excuse for their behavior. It's not at all function of the things you've done or the way that you act - it's them. Even if that's tough to believe sometimes.

 

I'm sorry you're going through this right now. I don't understand the pressure you're under from friends and coworkers, and I'm sure it hurts, but they're buying into an ideology that allows those men to abdicate all responsibilty. It is in this way that men like that are allowed to go on a harass women in the future. You did nothing wrong and by affirming that you're saying it isn't okay for anyone to go through what you had to and that's how it should be. However bad you feel, please know that there is a community here that supports you one hundred percent.

Good on you for speaking up, not enough people do and now those that were making you feel uncomfortable can reevaluate how they treat others, and you've most likely saved someone else from going through the same experience...be proud of yourself!

 

@AelNire im glad that something was finally done about that situation. Im really sorry others at work have given you a hard time about it. I don't have anything to add that hasn't already been said, would like to reiterate that it isn't at all on you, like at all. Idk, just know I support you. I'm bad at this.
