IDOTG is probably my favourite sounding SA album.

I want the production of S/T, but the songwriting of IDTII and Hebrews because I think the songs are there, they're just presented in an alarming way. Fight me.

First? Ha, yea right. I want the fluidness, gang vocally-ness irony with a bit of ST poppiness. I think Max is best when he holds back and pops out, instead of just being like AAAAAAAAAAH all the time.

I never thought I would type these words so screenshot this as blackmail against me if I ever piss you off

IDTII is actually Pretty Good™ and I'm getting back into SA again

I still jam Rum on a regular basis, people hate the lyrics but I quite love the music

Rum, 17 Coked Up, and Atta Boy are good. The rest isn't my thing, but I do appreciate Max doesn't redo the same album twice

IDTII has grown on me, and is, Pretty Good™... I still think it's the worst Say Anything album though.

Oh yeah worst by a good bit but it has its place in the SA canon

Listening to IDTII just to make sure it's as good as I remember.

    It's better.

I still think the album is Max's second best. My only hesitation in saying so is that I love Baseball and In Defense so damn much.

I'm almost at the point where I don't listen to a new release from Max. He's released some of the most important music in my life and have put on some great shows, but sadly it just doesn't connect with me anymore.

    Edit: I loved Hebrews though.

I'm still very interested in whatever he does next because I loved Hebrews and he never makes the same album twice so hopefully don't have to worry about another IDTII.

I for one cannot wrap my head or my ears around Hebrews, are there some genuinely good songs on there that I'm ignorant about

I love pretty much every song on that album. Six Six Six is pretty weak but even that has a great ending and is way, way better than anything on IDTII for me.

IDTII and IARB are the only Say Anything records I own.

I should buy Hebrews too though.

I finally made it through I Don't Think It Is after not feeling it last year and it's really not that bad. The production is grating on a few tracks but there are some really catchy songs and Max gets a huge plus for having Dylan from Tiny Moving Parts play guitar on it.

yeah that was something i took away from IDTII on my last listen: its got some real catchy numbers and i like the more aggressive bent to the songwriting.

one thing im struggling with getting back into SA is how....problematic some of the songs can be. i think Max is a good songwriter and ive always liked his mixture of literate and humorous lyricism, but i cant really defend something like "Died A Jew" or "Re****ed In Love" or "Vexed" or "Property" or "Every Man Has A Molly". i know that context is important and, much like Pinkerton, i think the point of most of those songs is to showcase how fucked up Max was at the time of recording and those songs dont actually reflect how he feels or what he believes but i still cant help but cringe at certain lines. thats really more just where i draw my line as far as listening to an artist goes and i dont think Max is malicious or exuding bigotry its just something thats been in the back of my mind as ive been listening to the SA discography for the last day or so.

all of that being said, ive quite enjoyed my time re-listening to these albums. IARB, IDOTG, and the S/T have always been albums ive liked/loved and they hold up really well. AMD is much better on re-visit even if "the crap rains down" makes me laugh at how unintentionally funny it is. i guess now with the passing of time i can view AMD as its own thing instead of viewing it through the lens that Max said it would be "IARB pt 2!" or "the most punk rock thing we've ever done!" and all that stuff. Hebrews also fairs better on revisit although the songs "Hebrews" and "Nibble Nibble" are kinda gross with their very odd choice of metaphors theyre still enjoyable enough and the album itself has some all time greats in the SA canon with "John McClane" and "Push". IDTII has some more....questionable moments but I can get past them for the sake of indulgence and i quite enjoyed listening to it. its catchier than i remember and i like Max shouting his fucking head off in like every other song. all in all its been really enjoyable

I think "Every Man Has A Molly" is the one song out of those that really works for me mainly because even the song itself seems to be taking the piss out of that mindset and how ridiculous it is. Those other songs just suck and have some very dumb lyrics.

Also glad someone else recognizes Push's greatness. Aaron's part in that song is incredible.

yeah EMHAM feels like Max realizes hes being childish and kinda sexist but hes both literally and figuratively at the end of his rope. still, i cringe at certain parts in all those songs. "Died A Jew" is the one i legitimately dont like and think its kinda racist, Hebrews title track was a much better way of saying "this song is for the marginalized minorities in America, not just Jewish people but Native Americans, African Americans, etc" whereas DAJ feels like this weird "we've got it harder than you!" kind of pissing contest.

oh god yeah "Push" is wonderful. Originally I thought the idea of a song from the perspective of Max as Sherri gives birth was kinda weird but now I love how intense it gets and Aaron absolutely slays his part. I love how many little references to both other SA songs and mwY songs there are. "who sailed a steady harbor with a not so steady hand"-Messes Of Men "Theres a swelling in the threshold and a creaking in the floor"- Cardiff Giant "Naked but his fathers former belt he wears so well"-Belt "As a thousand thoughtless rhymes assembled on the shelf"- Colorblind "While the son and heirs of the black holes"-The Stephen Hawking
