aside from the obviously epic "29", I REALLY like "Suzuki" & "1997".

  4. Is there a "general" explanation for why the band has had so many lineup changes over the years? Like, has it been documented at all that Chris is hard to work with, or that he kicks them out, or that he likes to switch it up, or is it just coincidence that people have joined and left the band at really high rates

I feel like the rhythm section doesn't shine like previous albums and that bums me out. It's probably just the production choice, but it feels just lacking to me.

  6. I feel like it's not consistent really -- some started families, others went back to old bands, etc. I would love to read a formal oral history of the band

This album kicks ass. I love the energy, and "29" is pure bliss. As a longtime fanboy, there's something so special about the story told here and what the band means to those who've loved them all these years. Can't wait to spend time on the back porch tonight with this one ;-)

    Yoooo this album tho.

And I haven't even listened to 29 yet.

We're talking about the same guy who wrote horrendous piles of horse shit lyrics like "Rocks Tonic Juice Magic", right?

i'd say chris' worst moment lyrically was the trilogy even though i love all of those records, just v melodramatic in a way less vivid poetic way than either stay what you are or through being cool (completely perfect song called "undress me" excepted). which, of course, is what he was going for

anyway i think this album is better lyrically than those

I fucking love that weird cool piano part in Rosé. It reminds me of some of the instrumentals in Iron and Wine's The Shepherds Dog .

Well I can do a few...

First off, I cannot speak to any of the super early guys like Anthony Anastasio, Justin Gaylord or Sean McGrath (RIP) but for the rest I can give it a go...

Bryan Newman: basically the co-founder of the band. Left cuz Eben didn't think he was a good enough drummer.

Ted Alexander: was a roadie before joining. Apparently his head wasn't totally in it and was kicked out as Chris wanted to play guitar and sing live rather than be just lead vocalist.

Eben D'Amico: this is where it gets sticky. Eben basically admitted to being over the "scene" a long time ago (probably 2002/2003) and apparently was very instrumental in the In Reverie sound. It seems obvious that he left because of the regression to punky material for Sound The Alarm. Manny even told me they hardly played any Can't Slow Down because Eben didn't wanna do it. So I'm sure Chris and Dave and Pete may have communicated that to Manny. I must say though, I don't disagree with Eben that they shoulda followed the growth path they were on, moving from Through Being Cool to Stay What You Are to In Reverie. I think the loss of Eben is one of the main reasons for the lack of quality, post In Reverie.

Pete Parada: joined (I think) after after the use of a touring drummer to replace Bryan. Ted left/quit and Chris returned to guitar duties, making them a four piece. After the Sound The Alarm touring cycle ended Pete left, probably sensing that Saves' shot at the big time was long gone. Soon after jointed The Offspring.

Dave Soloway: even though he isn't on Can't Slow Down, I think most fans consider Dave the second most integral member of the band behind Chris. Honestly, I stuck it out through the time he left, and when he finally quit, I must admit...some of the Saves The Day-ishness for the band has kinda left. This one hurt, even though Arun seems super, super cool.

Manny Carrero: joined after the departure of Eben. Really nice guy. Left when Durijah did in 2009 ostensibly to concentrate on Glassjaw.

Durijah Lang: joined after Pete quit. Left when Manny did, apparently to commit themselves to Glassjaw. Both then quit Glassjaw in 2015.

Spencer Peterson: this is where you see that Saves' just doesn't matter to people anymore. They had this little guy for about two hours (long enough to record Daybreak) and then he quit to join some bigger flavor of the moment band I can't remember. Seemed like a bit of douche.

Claudio Rivera: replaced Spencer and was credited on Daybreak as a member despite not playing a note on it (Claudio was credited as a member of the band, Spencer was credited as the drummer, so it's not like the band was lying). And apparently, like Spencer, seeing Saves The Day as a minor league gig, quit the group after recording the self-titled album to join the bigger Motion City Soundtrack. In his defense, he seemed way cooler than Spencer.

And there we have it. Somewhere in there they've gained a drummer named Dennis Wilson who believe it or not really doesn't sound much better than Beach Boys drummer Dennis Wilson, who, as great as
he was, was not a technically great drummer.

Funny enough, I'm not doubting that I've probably asked for it around 2000 times!

    Things have changed.

Not sure how to take some of the phrasing in that post. Just because someone got a better gig doesn't mean they look negatively on their past projects. Claudio, for example, was Motion City's drum tech for a long time and filled in on a number of occasions due to injury.

would say dave was the biggest loss for this band lineup-wise, miss his sensibility a lot while still loving daybreak and the new one

I don't think that means that either. But if you were Chris and you let this guy Spencer in your band you think you've got commitment. And dude comes in for two minutes, quits to join some halfass Pete Wentz side project (looked it up) and leaves you in the dust. It just kinda shows that STD didn't seem to be much more than a stepping stone for him. From like 1999 through maybe 2004 that wasn't the case. People I'm sure wanted to be in that band.

They started demoing daybreak with the Under the Boards lineup. I'd kill to hear some of those demos.

Manny/Durijah were always the biggest loss to me. They brought so much to their sound.

That's exactly what I was going to say. He was long time friends with MCS as well and stepped up so the band could continue. I think that's pretty cool of him.

Those lyrics still aren't as bad as this album's. Especially not the line:
    "Light comes from within
And your beaming eyes don't seem so bright"

I think a part of it is that his lyrics used to be more relatable (at least to me) and poetic. Now it's so straightforward in the cheesiest way possible.

  24. Those lyrics are definitely worse than this album. How is that even a conversation?
