Just finished my second half marathon on consecutive Sundays. Beat my pb by one minute (down to 1.57) despite a not easy course. Very happy!

I had to use stationary bike the other day because all the treadmills were taken up, literally the worst piece of exercise equipment.

Dammit that's a good time. I did 4.01miles today in 34:51. 8'41" avg pace. If I kept your pace I would be destroyed/not make it. Not necessarily concerned with time, but more so distance. I want to do a half marathon this year at some point so I want to work my way up to there. I've been running only like 1-3 times a week so I've got to up the times I run. Going to shoot for 5-6 times a week. Also would like to do my first 5k. That would be relatively easy for me at this point, just want to join in on one for competition's sake.

Fun fact for today. ETID - Holy Book of Dilemma came on shuffle near the end of my run. When that first blast beat kicked in 6 seconds in I did a ridiculous "air blast beat" right after I passed a guy. He had to have given me a crazy look.

Also I'm thinking about getting a treadmill. Leaning toward Craiglis/Facebook online yardsale over buying one new. It will of course be for me and then my wife. Not ready to pull the trigger, but it will be a good thing to still get a run in even if I don't feel like driving to the park.

Last Friday I did my longest continuous run of 5.1miles in 45mins. Today I did my fastest 5k at 26:14.

My 5.1 was assisted by Thrice's "running" playlist on Spotify that Riley put together, and today's 5k was assisted by Mastodon's new album. Emperor of the Sand seems to be a great album for a 5k since it keeps around the same bpm for most of it as it seems to me.

Just finished my third half marathon of the year. 8 minutes away from my pb so a bit disappointed with my time but some mornings it's just the getting up and taking part that counts!!!

Been slowly working my way back into running after dealing with some injuries. Think I'm gonna bite the bullet and register for my 2nd half marathon later in the summer. Did it last year and it was pretty fun (maybe fun isn't the right word haha).

I know I could just Google for tips, but I trust people on here more so I'm just gonna ask you guys.

Does anyone have any tips for someone trying to get back into running? I prefer treadmills to outside (at least until it warms up), have pretty good shoes, and am the kind of person who, whenever I tried to get into running, would get really into it (usually Couch to 5K) for a few weeks before fading off. I'd really like to run a 5k soon, which I've never done before.

Setting a goal (the 5K) is always a good start. Pick the date and sign up so you have to run it. From there, find a training plan that interests you and count back from race day to give yourself a starting date. Finally, add training into your calendar and set reminders. If I'm feeling unmotivated, I find it useful to treat training like a business meeting that you can't miss. If it's in my calendar, I have to do it.

Really it comes down to self-motivation, but something like Couch to 5K shouldn't consume more than a few months of your time tops.

Do you have any running groups in the area? A lot of groups will have runners at various abilities and running with people you tend to run farther and longer because you are all talking and having a good time. And if you're competitive, there's always runners ahead of you to work towards. A lot of groups will maybe have folks that grab dinner or drinks after too if you're into that sort of thing. I think the combo of community and getting better is a good way for new runners to get the running bug to stick. If that doesn't interest you or is feasible, I would say sign your ass up for a race or two. If a financial commitment doesn't get you out there, than I'm not really sure what will beyond some bleak health news (which I don't wish on anyone).

Bottom line, it has to be a priority. My dad had three kids, a full time job, and took night classes for his MBA at one point. And within that scheduled still managed to train for two marathons a year by getting up for runs at 4 or 4:30 in the morning. That's an extreme scenario, but he made it a priority to get out there. I am not that dedicated and no one needs to be that dedicated, but priority is a big part of it.

Had a cyst removed that was keeping me from running for longer than I'd like to admit. Hoping it is healed up over the next two weeks or so. Really need to hit the trails while the weather allows it.

On top of all the other advice given I'd say if you have a friend in a similar situation, run together and sign up for a race together. Then you don't want to let each other down and if you're anything like me, you'll want to try your hardest/compete against your friend!

Been feeling pretty good about my running in the last couple week. Don't seem to need as much recovery time as I once did and on course for over 80 miles this month which is good. Did a pretty easy 11.5 miles this morning, didn't feel like much effort. I just struggle to fit in those 85-90% effort runs to really help boost my time. We have something called parkrun over here in the UK, basically free and timed 5k's all over the country run by volunteers, it's pretty huge and a great initiative. I've been trying to go to that every week lately in order to encourage me to run with fuller effort. Managed to get my second best 5k time this week. 4th half marathon of the year coming up at the end of April, aiming for a 1:55.

Also been reading Scott Jurek's (ultramarathon runner) autobiography which I'd highly recommend. He's featured heavily in Chris McDougall's 'Born to Run', which is an absolutely essential read.

As I've said in this thread, I'd avoid treadmills. My best advise is to find routes that you can get excited to run and expand on. I always advise to hit as many hills as you can and progress to bigger challenges. This keeps it all fresh, goal oriented and exciting. I remember climbing a hill that I had built up to for months and feeling a great sense of accomplishment.

Races are great motivation, but often times people just quit after training and running it which I think is a shame. I think long term planning is the key along with signing up for multiple events.

Even if someone is looking to run casually, there is a certain level of lifestyle change that is required or it will just be a phase. When running/exercising rises in the priority list, there are natural consequences. If there's a family, even more will be impacted. So talking about it, planning a schedule, starting a routine, and sticking with the routine are all different steps along the way. I don't say that to make it sound daunting, but it's the truth. Whether you are a competitive runner or someone casually running a few times a week, there is still a commitment and a choice to run instead of doing something else. I guess what I'm getting at with this post is that in order to get on a consistent schedule it may be worthwhile looking at your current schedule with and around work. What are the priorities currently and where can running fit within that framework.

When you get far enough into running. You will depend on it. I honestly start to feel uneasy and frustrated if a go more than 3 days without a solid 8-12 mile run.

My hip flexor/general groin area can go f itself.

Been trying a few things but anyone got any tips for not having hip flexor issues?

wrap yourself in petals for armor.

I just ran for an hour straight, 7 miles. I'm pretty proud of that. I ran the first half of it at an 8 min 30 sec pace and gradually slowed down as I got more tired. I know these numbers are nothing impressive, but when I first started running I could barely go for five minutes.

Nice work! Training for anything specific, or just getting out there to be active?

Nothing specific, I'm a pretty competitive person towards myself (if that make sense?) so I am always pushing myself to run faster and longer. I would love to do some races - I can run a 5k distance easily and would love to one day complete a marathon, but I think right now the goal is to at least run a half-marathon distance, since I can't even do that yet. I'll probably sign up for some 5k's this summer just to compete in something.
