I'm a runner. Just hit over 700 miles for the year so far. I run in Brooks Neuros and use a Forerunner 220.

Where in Utah do you reside? People talk about training in Oregon and Colorado, I am sure they are great, but Utah has to be a lot of fun. I would love to get out there and log some miles.

Edit: if you prefer I do that via PM just let me know. I forget that some folks are more private than myself.

I've never been to Utah. Always wanted to explore the west more.

really a beautiful place. from the mountains in the north to all the cool arches/zions parks in the south. if you can get past the mormon stereotypes its not so bad. i grew up a non believer and have loved it in my later years.

I really will need to check it out. I've been to Colorado several times and loved it, but I don't have much experience in the surrounding areas.

Utah is awesome. Like a very hidden gem, almost literally with where it is placed in the country (along with Idaho being a hidden gem). So much attention to surrounding areas that Utah just gets forgotten about.

Ran in my new Asics for the first time today. Love 'em. So light and breathable. Love my Nike's too, but the Asics are somehow even lighter. great stuff.

Anyone have or try the Adidas Adios 2 or Feather 3? They seem to be on the top of every "best running shoe" list.

I have strictly run in Brooks for the past 5 years. Never liked Adidas, Nike or Asics. Which Asics are you wearing?

Did a 10k trail race this morning; my first one. Hills weren't all that steep, but there were plenty of rolling ones, going up and down and over a bunch of tree ruts and fallen over trees. Was about 80 degrees, so was pretty warm, sapping my energy a bit. Once the flat bits came I could pick up my speed a bunch, but with such huge thighs and calves(from being a sprinter and rugby player in high school and college), it was just too much muscle to go much faster. I'll probably have to do a lot more leg workouts to get faster/better at these races

Anybody else do trail running here? Would love to know more leg exercises I could do to increase leg strength

I think more than anything it's just getting more used to longer distance running/racing. If anything, your body has plenty of speed built up from rugby, sprinting, etc. relative to most distance runners. I think learning when to surge and how to dispense your speed throughout a race is what you are looking for from what I gather. Learning to love hills and inclines is a great advantage. Something simple like breaking someone down on a hill is great for a couple of reasons. First, you break you opponent's spirit if you cruise by them on an uphill. Secondly, you can use the downhill as a breather/catch up while your body's momentum takes you down. Learning when to pick the tempo up towards the end is another learned skill through experience. My point is, it doesn't really matter if you have the speed ability, if you don't know your body in terms of racing for a given type of race. That said, I fully support strength and cross training initiatives.

    Give what you can.

Question. First the first time, I ran on a treadmill over the Winter (3-5 times a week) up until about a week ago. Now that I'm back outside on sidewalks, I've been having pretty sharp pains in both legs from my heels up the sides of my calves. I'm guessing this is because of the transition back to a harder surface, but has anyone else had this problem? Did it go away on its own? My shoes are pretty old so that could be a factor too I suppose. Any insight/advice would be awesome. Thanks!

I'd be fairly certain it's the age of the shoes, especially if they're older than a year; if so, I'd look into getting new ones if you can

Yeah they're going on almost two years. Definitely time to swap em out. Time to go back through the thread to get some ideas...

Yeah def get new ones then; both times I had lower back issues, in high school and college, when I got a new pair of shoes, the pain immediately went away.

i've read that most quality shoes (let's say $80 and up range) only really last about 150-200 miles, give or take.

I get about 250-350 out of my shoes.
