Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (Gareth Edwards, December 16, 2016) Movie • Page 53

  1. Leia didn't bother me as much as Tarkin did. He looked like a cut scene from a video game. I woulda just made him a hologram for a few scenes/discussion and used him less personally.

This is the take. Also the whole idea of using a deceased person's likeness (yes I know they got permission from the Cushing estate) makes the CGI Tarkin feel just... unsettling to me. Leia was fine, probably due to her only really being in it for one shot, but she definitely looked way better. Additionally though, I think that including a CGI Tarkin as much as they did kind of cheapened the reveal of Leia at the end. Again, reveals aren't exactly great cinematic/narrative devices, but just something I thought about.

I didn't know Tarkin was CGS until afterwards. I just assumed he was a great casting choice like Mon Mothma

The varying opinions on Tarkin are crazy. I've talked to a few people at work today who genuinely thought he was real.

I've heard this elsewhere and it's something I wholeheartedly agree with: Tarkin should've just been shown either from the back or in reflection/shadow throughout this movie. That way when we see him in full in A New Hope, it would be like a sort of grand reveal all over again for the character.

(Embarrassed to admit, but...) I didn't notice either until Leia was revealed and then I put it together that he was CGI too. But to my credit, I watched it in 3D and I can never see shit with those glasses on. Everything looks blurry to me (therefor my opinion on graphical elements doesn't mean much). I didn't have much of a problem with it, but I do agree a hologram scene would have been the best way to have him in the movie for sure.

Still sticking to my earlier opinion though: the AT-ATs and AT-STs were the highlight of the CGI. This is the first modern movie where they were prevalent. The part where the AT-AT slowly turns its head and prepares to fire was terrifying. I was having Battlefront flashbacks.

Haha, it blows my mind someone could think he looked real. Good CGI? I don't agree, but sure. Lifelike, though? It jumped out at me the second he first hit the frame.

    When is CGI good?

Is it when I can't tell it's CGI?

I could tell it was CGI but I was fine with it.

Bad idea. Look at how up in arms people got over hologram 2pac.

I was mostly messing around with that comment, I really couldn't care less about people's opinions about the CGI

It looks much better in darker lighting or when his face is only in profile. They could have been a little more strategic with how they used it. I do think it would have been fine if he was just recast and maybe make use of prosthetics to capture some of Cushing's stronger features. At the end of the day, it's distracting at first, but it doesn't make or break the film for me.

How can you guys be SO caught up with the CGI but not even complain about the fact that there was no scrolling text at the beginning of the film? I almost walked out right there.

The opening scene with Mendelsohn and Mads was better than an opening crawl

one thing is a visible distraction from what is going on within the scene and was entirely unnecessary, the other has no importance whatsoever

I did miss it, but it didn't ruin anything for me. Having a "flashback"/years before scene has the same purpose.

What made it really jarring was that it started with "a long time ago...". My brain was like whoa whoa whoa stop the clock, when it wasn't followed by the scrolling text and John Willams score.

CGI Tarkin/Leia was worse than CGI Professor X in Wolverine.

Years from now if my children watch Star Wars for the first time chronologically. I wonder if they'll be thinking "that cgi Tarkin guy looks way better in ANH. Why does the rest of the computer animation look shittier?"

I can't believe people didn't realize Tarkin was CGI immediately.
