While I loved the film, I do agree that the characterization was lacking in many aspects, but instead of discussing that more I want to use it to spring into a bigger subject of has the Star Wars story transcended the films and what that means going forward for the necessity of knowing all the canon. Catalyst has been brought up many times here and it greatly enhances Rogue One and helps answer some of the characterization questions with Galen, Krennic and Tarkin, but those are lacking from the movie itself. My question is does the overall Star Wars story being much more expansive make this ok and should getting a lot of these character/plot elements require going outside the films? I know those who are more casual fans will say "No" and even as someone who reads/watches everything I completely agree. While a possible book on Baze/Chirrut or a Cassian comic would possibly make Rogue One better for me, it's odd that these things may start to become required. I personally view the canon should be enhancing without necessitating. The Clone Wars series enhances Sith and Attack of the Clones, but isn't necessary to those stories. I think this is an issue that could affect the standalones going forward since they're gonna have a lot of new characters in them and am just curious if anyone else sees the canon becoming more necessary and almost a crutch that can help fix mistakes for the hardcore fans, but leave out the more casual fans who deserve to enjoy it to the farthest possible extent as well.

I felt bad when the blind guy and the assassin and company were cornered at that base, trying to decide who's going to run out and flip the switch and they had the stereotypical moment of the black guy saying "I can do it!" And he immediately gets shot and killed when he steps out to run. Like, come on.

Ok I'm obviously not as invested as some in this. But I didn't even realize that Tarkin was CGI. I guess I haven't seen the originals in some time but I never even noticed and would have never until I came here.

I agree with all of this. I read Catalyst and I think that's why the development of Krennic, Galen and Trakin didn't bother me so much. But a movie should be able to stand on it's own without needing the support of outside material. While I greatly enjoy this film, I think it does fail on a certain level because it relies so much on outside canon to tell a complete story.

While I love the Vader sequence at the end and wouldn't take it out because of just how great it is for Star Wars fans, if you look at the story being told here, it doesn't really belong in the movie. I think tying it so closely to the start of A New Hope is cool, but largely unnecessary.

The last couple minutes were really awesome. Jyn is tied with Rey as my Star Wars bae.

  7. Haha. My girlfriend also didn't know Tarkin was cgi. That surprised me.

  8. You thought this was his worst movie? Gmmm. I disagree pretty strongly there. I think The Zilla suffered from the same things you think this did. And Monsters was only ok. I never liked it as much.

One thing I love about this thread(and SW threads in general)is how invested you guys all are. I never have really delved into the canon besides the first season of CW, and the video games. Though now I really want to check out the books/comics.

  13. Saw it again. That space battle is worth the price of admission alone. It has some issues and isn't as "fun" as TFA -- you don't leave with the same feeling as that one gives you. But damn if I didn't still really enjoy it.

Now only 363 days until more light sabers and force and rey! Hope some new books come out to read and enjoy.

Saw this opening night and have had time to collect my thoughts. Overall I really liked it. I think the main thing keeping me from loving it is the fact that I already knew how it would end, whereas with, say, Episode 7, I had no idea where it was going so I got more swept up in it. But I thought the characters were developed just fine, and I wasn't expecting the end to be so emotional, which I loved. K-2SO was the obvious scene stealer. Donnie Yen was badass, even though I don't think his acting was great.

There were a lot of little things I wasn't a fan of though... Forest Whitaker was just absolutely terrible in this, he really cranked his performance up to 11. CGI Tarkin and to a lesser extent Leia was so distracting and awful. And while I love the tragic element of the ending, it contrasted sharply with the other stuff going on at the end. Ultimately most of the things I disliked came down to choices that were damned if you do, damned if you don't, so I understand why they were made. Curious to see what a second watch would do for my opinion but overall I really enjoyed it.

Star Wars scratches a unique itch in me. I like sci-fi and I like fantasy. However I never really got into things like LotR or D&D. Star Wars still has those fantasy elements like the Jedi and the force and I love delving into the lore. But it combines all that stuff with sci-fi elements that I love to create this unique thing that is powerful enough to grab hold of me even if the quality of storytelling can be uneven.

its definitely a Star Wars "Suicide Squad" in a way, just much better. Kind of grim but enriches the original trilogy I think.

    I LOVED this movie

That Vader scene was an incredible movie moment. The reason you go to the cinema. Something I'll never forget tbh.

It's been awhile since I've seen Monsters, maybe they're close. But I think Godzilla is fantastic, the human characters are thin but the spectacle, the action and the monster, they speak to a much larger and more interesting thematic message and goal than anything in Rogue One, with Godzilla's context being a representation of the atom bomb and the movie being about dumb Americans who unleash him and then have no idea how to control him. That movie was about Godzilla, not the human characters. This one is about the human characters, so those same flaws hold it back more.
