I think another reason I was so quick to throw shade on criticism was due to the fact I really really like this director. Like I've been anticipating this movie for a long time, and I'm sure I do have blinders on to some things about the film. I just feel that the character development on the whole was handled fine. Hell a year from now this could be my least fav SW movie ever. Though just after seeing it I'm jazzed as hell, and was kinda taken aback by those particular critisms. So I apologize.

I love Gareth Edwards. This is his worst movie but when he flexes his visual muscles it's astounding. As spectacle it works really well, as a movie... it's lacking.

Don't really get how you could cut Tarkin out of Rogue One. Minutes after this film concludes he's THE guy when it comes to the Death Star. Not sure how that would make sense unless they had set him up in Rogue One (and furthermore, Catalyst). I get the Krennic love and can even understand (though I disagree) the CGI hate, but I don't see how they could have gotten around it without creating quite a large plot hole with the original film.

How? What does Tarkin do that's so essential that Vader or Mendelsohn couldn't? Cutting him would lend Mendelsohn more weight as a villain and allow for more time to focus on bettering characterization and their dynamics

I'm sure it could. Still think removing Tarkin makes for a really weird ANH when you look at the saga as a whole. "Who the hell is this Tarkin guy? He was no where to be found 10 minutes before ANH a now he's running the show?"

Oh the first time he killed a "spy" who technically it's well within the framework of their line of work to be killed if they are compromised. But yeah I was talking about the second time.

A New Hope has existed for almost 40 years and done fine, I'm not sure Tarkin's place in it is threatened by Rogue One.

Not exactly my concern nor the point I was trying to make. There's a shitload of Krennic in Catalyst if you're trying to delve into his character further. Book was pretty good.

I know you're saying that, for chronological viewing, it might seem strange to go directly from Rogue One to A New Hope if there was no Tarkin in Rogue One. But that's a problem that only exists because Rogue One exists, and it's a minor problem, if that. Or, fine. Keep him in the movie. But just recast him, don't turn a dead man into a puppet, and minimize his role to let Mendelsohn be the primary antagonist of Rogue One and make him really come alive as a villain with the focus you free up by reducing unnecessary attention to a villain who never actually interacts with our protagonists.

My issues are with Rogue One, an expanded universe book doesn't help the character as he's portrayed onscreen.

Saw this earlier today and I really enjoyed it. Likely going to do a podcast on it, but not sure when just yet. Did anyone else catch Senator Organa mention a female jedi in hiding?

I keep seeing this being brought up and I think people aren't realizing he's referring to Leia being trusted with finding Obi Wan.

    Uhhhhhhhh he didn't though.

He literally described a Jedi that "served him well in the Clone Wars", which is what Leia references in her message that we see in A New Hope. The "I would trust her with my life" line was about Leia, because he could trust her to go get Obiwan.

I took it as a reference to Ahsoka, who was also around for Clone Wars, but I guess she never got the "Jedi" title really. Maybe I just enjoyed her novel a little too much recently and was hoping it was about her haha.

The "her" he mentions is Leia. Mon Mothma said to send someone he can trust on the mission to get Obi-Wan and his response was saying he'll send Leia. It explains why Leia is going to find Obi-Wan at the beginning of A New Hope.

"But existing is basically all I do!" Prestigious

Definitely. Organa says "HE served me well in the Clone Wars." Also, "I will send for HIM."

Had my 2nd viewing today. I liked a lot more this time. The pacing in the 1st two acts wasn't as jarring. Won't be a classic, but it's a great addition to the Star Wars universe.

I clearly focused more on the "Can we trust her?" portion of that conversation, which led to me misinterpreting it.

Trust me, I would LOVE to get a live action Ahsoka, but that moment had nothing to do with her.

Hell, I wish it was because it would mean she was canonically alive.

Oh yeah same. I think just the way that portion was phrased threw me off. I think it's something quite a few people have mixed up.

Have you read the novel? I highly suggest t for anyone who enjoys her character.

In here maybe, but I saw it brought up on some other sites/forums. Plus a friend I was texting earlier thought the same haha. But either way I got it wrong. Not a big deal since it doesn't affect how much I enjoyed the movie.

I've been trying to really dive into the canon stuff this year. Watched Clone Wars, been watching Rebels, and now I'm going through the rest of the books I have to check out in timeline order. Next up for me is Catalyst, which I had hoped to read before seeing this, but it clearly didn't happen.
