MCR, Misfist and Op Ivy as the 3 headliners for 2022 would be dope as fuck.

 

Legit question for all the usual Riot attendees in this thread. If these were the three headliners for next year, BUT the catch was is that undercard was somewhat lacking, would you still be stoked to go?

It’d be an interesting concept if Riot just loaded their guns on headliners next year, but kinda sacrificed the undercard bands

 

Given that it's my "last white whale" reunion set (Operation Ivy), a band I've loved since their first album but haven't seen in years (MCR), and another band I've always enjoyed peripherally and have wanted to see (the Misfits)? Most definitely.

But it depends on what you mean by "lacking" as far as the undercard goes. Riot Fest could go light from a budget perspective and still make me happy if they picked the artists right, y'know?

Personally, I could do with them ditching some of the middle and under card "pop"-leaning acts (Best Coast, Meg Myers, Alex G, Joywave) in favor of more punk/emo on the lower end. Those artists are fine and all but in a live setting they tend to be incredibly dull. Especially with the sun beating down down on you in the middle of a field.

 

MCR and Misfits have me already stoked for 2022

Of course a strong undercard is what make a festival good, but these 2 headliners are enough for me to make me happy.

 

I feel like MCR and Misfits takes too much money out of the pot to also have Op Ivy next year but I would love to be wrong

 

i think i trust them enough to go every year no matter what, but per your question i did a mental exercise of putting those 3 headliners in place of this year, and then chopped off lines 2 and 3 to see if i would still be stoked, and to be honest, i wasnt as excited.

I agree with @alkalinexandy that with that hypothetical stacked deck of headliners they would do best to tighten up their genre bending for just that year. really focus on the fans of those three bands. lots of classic punk, ska, 90s skate punk, gothy/horror, and early-mid 00's emo/posthardcore. sprinkle a few random things in there for flavor. maybe one other big name, like if you can get bauhaus reunion as your 4th name opening for either misfits or MCR, that would go along way.

 

Honestly, the 2019 line-up was pretty close to ideal for me as far as the undercard goes. The pop-leaning acts/acts that Lolla has or would book were limited in number and most were punk/emo/indie adjacent in a meaningful way, rather than in a "they tweeted about going to hardcore shows when they were 16 once" way. It was a really cool mix of everything that makes Riot Fest a truly unique festivals.

It could have been better if they were to cut the "reunion fatigue" bands (American Football, Hot Snakes) and a few other acts (Cock Sparrer) in favor of a few more hip-hop acts - or even just to allow some of the bands in the middle to get a bump in stage/set time designation. But that's just nitpicking.

One of the biggest "issues" with a festival like Riot fest is that so much of the draw is from the older acts that don't seem to ever want to retire. Gotta "big up" some of the acts in the middle if you ever want to give them a shot at headlining 5-10 years from now.

This reminded me of the time Nirvana played a show with Joan Jett, St. Vincent and Kim Gordon on vocal duties. I would pay to see that tbh.

Also I will be down for another Dreamcar tour (No Doubt with Davey Havok)

 

Buckcherry is one of the last groups I would hear this from. lol

Although, Goldfinger’s old bassist plays bass with them now. So maybe Buckcherry has some big punk rock street cred I wasn’t aware of! Haha

 

Somehow, I don't think playing in Goldfinger gets you "punk rock street cred." It barely gets you "major label ska scene cred."

Also, The Offspring dropped some new dates today, and with this routing I’m starting to question whether or not they’re still in play for the Thursday party

 

Honestly, those dates make me think they are more in play for Thursday. *Puts on tinfoil hat*

That's not a full tour. They're probably flying in for date #1 and traveling to date #2 via bus. So it's plausible for them to fly-in, play a show in Chicago on Thursday night, and be in Tennessee on Saturday with Friday as a travel day or whatever...

Now, here's the rub. And where my theory gets a little wild.

Those are also all shows put on in conjunction with radio stations. I could imagine a scenario where Thursday's preview party has a Q101 tie-in with the Offspring headlining. And the only way to get a ticket (unless you already have one) is to win tickets through them.

Is this likely? Maybe not. But it's certainly within the realm of possibility, assuming that station has been playing the Offspring regularly still. And would provide the band with a justifiable reason to be there in the first place.

Anyway, the third headliner for Riot Fest 2022 is going to be the Talking Heads with Paul Banks on lead vocals.

It needs to be somewhat realistic. The Clash with YUNGBLOOD. He has ska influences, after all. In case you haven't read any of those articles about how ska is back.
