How does everyone feel about now knowing 2 of 3 headliners for next year a whole year and a half ahead of time? Instead of 4 months

All fair play, except Wilco that I really don't see ever playing Riot in any capacity. They skew too adult contemporary.

TBH, I've always wondered what headliners they put out offers too and got turned down or it just didn't work out for one reason or another. You have to figure they've tried for the Strokes, Green Day, and/or the Yeah Yeah Yeahs at one point or another.

See, I really don't want them to branch out too far into the pop direction. There are so many other festivals filling that niche. If they dip into that territory beyond a few bands each year it would cheapen the brand significantly, and kinda defeats the whole purpose IMHO. I'd much prefer they repeat headliners than have a full stage that comes off as "Lolla-lite" each year.

That being said, I actually think the 1975 would be an okay headliner option at some point. But I really don't think any of the other names you listed would wind up in the top line at this point. Except maybe St. Vincent, who I'm honestly surprised hasn't played yet.

I really do always wonder who Riot has put offers in on and gotten turned down by over the years. I'd love to see the list because like I said above... Gotta figure they've put offers in on at least some of these acts before.

if people like them that is wonderful and no disagreement here but i hope acts like 1975 or phoebe bridgers dont take headlining spots at riot, theres already so many indie-based fests in the area. i agree headliner pool should widen a bit but not that way.

I get that, but that show was so amazing that I still consider it my favorite show ever, even taking the "last" out of it. It was just an amazing celebration of the band. There's no one else I'd rather see a 36 song setlist from.

The way I see it, is I'm totally satisfied with how they "ended" and so anything else that we get from them here on out is just a bonus. I'd rather they do more than just tour CTTM every few years, but if that's all they ever do now, at least I had that show.

FWIW, The Misfits are advertising 2022 as Douglas Park:

I think there's a way to do repeats without feeling repetitive. Radiohead headlined Lollapalooza in 2008 and then didn't headline again until 2016. Foo Fighters headlined in 2011 and are rumored to headline this year, 10 years later. I know the headliner pool isn't massive (and I agree - acts like Phoebe, The 1975, and Big Thief are probably best suited elsewhere), but spreading them out more would help.

That album is less than 25 minutes long, I assume they will play that and then a load more of their catalogue

I am so pumped for 2022! This is already one of the best sets of headliners for me. There have been years where I didn’t watch any headliner. Since it has been outside for three days, I don’t think I have been super excited to see more than two headliners. So even if I hate the third, I’m already doing better than average for headliners.

Waiting for the rest of the lineup for 2021 before I commit to going or not, but 2022 is already strong with just those two bands tbh.

So with all the hella mega bands and the misfits out for this year, what are we thinking about the last 2021 headliner? Run the Jewels? Op Ivy reunion? Or someone else?

It's Run The Jewels. They would have teased another headliner if RTJ wasn't headlining, I think at least.

Technically they DID tease another headliner when MCR dropped, but I get what you’re saying. They’ve kinda slowly stepped back from that.

I think where people are getting that from was the ???????? poster where there was a block of question marks in front of Run the Jewels.

    The intrusive whisper fascinates me

It still seems odd to me that RTJ would be the third headliner (I know, they closed the main stage in 2018), so I’m convinced there’s just one more headliner of some sort. But, I wouldn’t be surprised if it did end up being RTJ

Yeah, this is why I believe RTJ won’t be the third headliner. Unless they got an act in the same vein/popularity as RTJ and they co-headlined Sunday

Misfits as album show actually not necessary in my opinion. I've kinda soured on them after the shit they pulled during their "reunion" tour. Danzigs a fuck

I get you. But I'm not so sure Riot has that level of flex with artists. The pool is significantly smaller because of the limitations... And most of the big reunions happen once and either don't happen again, or they drop down from headliner to direct support. And there's only so many of those to go around.

It's just tricky. Although, I do think there could be some benefit to having the third headliner each year be somebody a bit smaller (a la Jawbreaker). This year it would be somebody like Devo. Because that would broaden the pool some - and arguably, you would be helping those artists get books higher up at other festivals, etc.

So far, 2/3 of the headliners are far more my speed than what we have for 2021. But unfortunately, I'm gonna need to hold on buying tickets because I have no idea what my 2022 is gonna look like in terms of vacations. Haha. But I'm already amped about it and hoping I get to go!

I'm thinking we don't get another headliner. But who the hell knows... They may have somebody on the line that feels like its a 50-50 split in terms of whether it happens or not. I feel like if they had somebody locked in with 100% certainty they would be hyping it more (a la the Misfits announcement today). But they also aren't entirely downplaying it either.

So I dunno. I would love to expect another biggie, but I think the biggest we might expect would be at the Offspring/Rise Against level of a "second stage" headliner, rather than an addition to the top three.

Same.. I've already seen MCR, it will be ungodly crowded, but I do want to go see the Misfits... I'm gonna wait to see next year's daily schedule and hope the world doesn't fall apart again

Getting The 1975 is no different than booking No Doubt. Their most recent album is more emo than most things that people consider emo at this point, too.

RTJ just headlined like 3 years ago, why is it so far fetched that they're not a headliner?

because they only headlined because a reunion fell through.
