My friends said I overreacted to the casting in Kubo. What'll they think of this? "They're just dogs!" It's so frustrating being friends with people who just don't get it.

  5. Oh hey, Supernatural brought Kevin back. Kind of.

Casting specifically those people is totally life imitating satire. At this rate, they should've also had Finn Jones and Emma Stone. Ridiculous.

I remember thinking it was weird that there mostly wasn't a Kubo backlash from what I saw. I guess the average person just doesn't think voice acting matters. Out of sight, out of mind.

I think all the Japanese characters are voiced by Japanese actors. Does that matter?

  9. Of course. But that's, like, the bare minimum he could've done. Whereas the fact that it's ScarJo and Tilda is like salting the wound.

New to the thread, what's the verdict on casting Joaquin/Rooney as Jesus/Mary Magdalene?

That felt really weird when I saw it. Doesn't help that Rooney Mara previously played Tiger Lily and voiced characters in Kubo.

this is more along the lines of general discussion, and abuse and accountability.

Women and poc simply existing in spaces is not representation.

well intentioned but this thread is supposed to be for books/TV/games etc where we see minorities being represented in them. (Sorry if I come across super sensitive. just gives off a weird vibe. And I'm having a really bad time which isn't helping.)

Do you have any thoughts on how the thread could be improved? If that involves starting from scratch, or even just not having a thread like this stickied, I'm open to that. (If you don't feel like getting into this at length, I understand.)

I started this as an attempt to bring attention to these sorts of discussions, but if I'm honest, I've never felt 100% comfortable with me being the one to make the thread. I just did it because it was my idea, figuring if the idea worked, the right people would gravitate to the thread and bring it to life. But if this isn't actually doing any good, however small, I'd love to hear that input and act accordingly.

My original intent was for this to address inclusion both in the stories and behind the scenes in the creative process. And, I also hoped for open discussions not only in marginalized demographics making appearances, but also in how those people were depicted. So, just a generally useful resource for learning about and discussing a wide range of representation-related topics.

Something I've considered is editing the first couple posts to be a better description of what this thread is for, as well as a series of links as resources for those interested in understanding these topics better. Dunno if that'd make any difference, though.

My favorite film about the story of Jesus is Risen solely for the fact that the actor who plays Jesus is actually fair-skinned with brown eyes.

the accountability in entertainment thread is probably a good place, it should be added to the first post tbh

We have an accountability in entertainment thread for stuff re: abuse/assault/problematic behavior. something about putting that kind of stuff in here when this is about "representation in art/entertainment" irks me. and it doesn't matter who makes the thread, as long as they have good intent. i think this should be kept stickied, and the accountability thread should be stickied as well bc of the severity of what's being discussed, and also so neither of these threads get lost.

yes i agree, this thread should be about inclusion both in art and behind the scenes, be it in games/tv/movies/books etc. So yeah, i think editing the OP and including links is a great idea. don't feel bad about making the thread, that's silly haha.

lol. I'm at peace with having sounded silly. But, yeah, thanks for your input. I totally agree about the "Accountability in Entertainment" thread, which I'll try to get someone to sticky. I'll also suggest that the first post in that thread get updated into a useful resource, much like I want to update this thread's first posts.

I'm going to aim for getting those posts, with clarifications and links to helpful resources, edited sometime over the holidays. Once I do an initial update, it should be easy to add any new resources anyone comes across for boosting marginalized voices. Between then and now, if you, @xkhiemster, or any other regulars have any suggestions you know of, let me know!

Once I get that updated, I'll work to help steer discussions better suited for "Accountability in Entertainment" to that thread so that we can keep this one more positive and informative. I certainly don't want people seeking out marginalized voices to have to dig through stories of whitewashing, let alone abuse!
