I get that. I don't know much about the movie other than seeing the poster and hearing the controversy.

  2. So, for clarity, you're saying you understand why it's harmful, but you're okay with it because it's some foreign film? The fact that it has Matt Damon in it doesn't make it Hollywood for you?

it is actually a step forward in a few ways (features a largely Chinese cast, Chinese director, Chinese studios i believe) but i just find it weird and annoying that we still need white Americans to sell foreign films to movie goers

No, sorry. My "I get that" was saying I now understood what you meant. And I consider Hollywood to be the American film studios so not really. Maybe the director just loves Matty. I dunno really know what influenced his choice.

Ethnic diversity is directed at Baron Mordo.

His character is Caucasian in the comics but is played by Chiwetel in the film, and I'm okay with it because he is an amazing actor who will make him an interesting character in sequels (and as a future protagonist).

I feel the same about the Ancient One. They were screwed no matter what. They couldn't have gotten a Tibetan actor because China would flip out and replacing a Tibetan actor with any other Asian actor would have caused issues as well.

Getting a well known woman (regardless of whatever color she is) to play the Ancient One is a big step.

But you can't please everyone and there is no reason they would try to aim away from the inevitable. I'll just be happy that both Mordo and the Ancient One have great people portraying them while at the same time reversing their ethnic/gender roles.

I think if you are the director and were told you got to work with Tilda Swinton, you would take the chance.

Unless the situation is Tilda Swinton is going to be playing a character who has traditionally been portrayed as non-white. That'd be a reason for pause, however supremely talented Swinton is

Unfortunately it is POC who come out the the least pleased in situations like this.

  17. I was just thinking about how Atlanta and Luke Cage are two of the best new shows out right now, and then something like that Madea Halloween movie comes along and I have absolutely zero interest in it.

I'd like to think race doesn't factor into my viewing habits, but I'm sure they do to some extent. I watch Fresh Off the Boat religiously, and yet I'm about half a season behind on Dr. Ken. I just think one's better than the other, so I watch one week-to-week and marathon the other eventually. Since there are so many shows out there, I want to watch Dr. Ken more out of some strange feeling of obligation than interest.

I feel like if I wasn't already following more than a dozen shows, I'd probably give Empire and Black-ish a chance. Maybe even Scandal and How to Get Away With Murder.

Anyway, back to Atlanta and Madea, what determines the accessibility or popularity of something, especially across racial lines? Do black people watch Madea movies just to support it because Tyler Perry is black, or do they actually like it because it's something that they relate to more than I can? Is Atlanta only so popular on Chorus because Donald Glover was on Community or is Childish Gambino? From my outsider perspective, why does it sometimes seem like there's a difference between black people that black people like and black people that non-black people like?

I'm just thinking of how apparently Ziyi Zhang was really popular in the States around the time Crouching Tiger, Geisha, and Hero came out, but she was never very well liked in China, but that's more of an international thing--a closer comparison would be what Anime are more popular here vs. in Japan.
