AFF is their 5th best album and I'll never accept any other placement.

Same with FANSD being their best.

I'm just so disappointed in this even though I didn't really have expectations, it's weird

What did you end up thinking about Two Lefts?

Yup, agreed. Nothing comes close and the last two have been light years away.

Nothing about any of these songs sticks with me. I feel the same way.

Still haven't listened to it - thanks for reminding me!

I think I really liked this when I first heard it because the bar and expectations were so low from CL. But after several plays and listening to the rest of the discography in sequence, this still isn't a great album. I like that they at least tried this time, you can tell the Matt's had fun writing and recording this and it was a natural process for them. I will say, at least I don't hate it.

  10. I talked to both Matt about this ... and that's totally not what they did. Like basically, the opposite of their thoughts ...

I already like this more than Five Scores. Love it.

This actually sounds like a perfect blend of FANSD and Mmhmm. Really loving this album. Not a bad song yet..

So I probably worded that in a confusing way, I didn't mean they tried to recreate that album, more that they tried to regroup after CL and figure out what the natural progression from FANSD would've been. Like you said in the first listen thread, something with the same confidence but more optimistic leaning. I'm totally okay being wrong about what their goals were, that's just what it sounds like to me.

    The rivalry is back on

I haven't read interviews or anything, but I doubt the band views CL as the collossal failure this thread makes it sound like, so idk why they'd feel pressured to do FANSD pt 2

They probably do... it was received terribly by basically everyone.

Maybe. I have no experience with anything like that, so I don't know for sure (and would definitely be interested to hear otherwise). But I'd imagine when they were touring the album, they had the most fun with those songs because they were new, and that there were plenty of fans there who either love everything they touched, or hadn't heard it at all but liked hearing new music. So I don't think it'd be as cut and dry as just getting bad album reviews or whatever.

I directed one of my best buddies (a music theorist and incredible pianist) to this record and he's already deeming it RK's best. He's a tough cookie to crack when it comes to music, but I actually predicted that he'd love the record as a musician, because it's just so darn musical. I think that's my favorite part about it. It doesn't have the emotion or consistency of MMHMM or FANSD, hence it falling just short in my eyes, but it's so thoughtful instrumentally and melodically it's hard for me not to be blown away.

Can someone explain why the Ohio song is called Mrs. Hippopotamuses'? I don't get it.

Seeing as at this point they only play Don't Blink and/or Collapsible Lung at shows, I'm pretty sure the band is fully aware of how bad CL was. Also, with the rise of social media, the band has probably seen a ton of both reviews (which were almost never positive) and tweets/comments from fans who didn't like CL. It's just hard to miss, and Jason might swoop in and correct me with his inside information, but it at least seems that they were definitely influenced by how panned CL was.

I think this album is great, the only thing stopping it from reaching Five Score/FANSD levels is having a few too many songs that I don't love. I already like it more than Mmhmm and think this is their best from a musical perspective. Also this feels like a very natural progression for them to me

Any chance that there's a choice of downloading it in a lossless format (FLAC, ALAC, WAV)?
