Because nobody else has given you answers to this, I'm going to tell you why I do this to guys. You're an ego boost. Girl needs to feel good about herself and is like who can I text who will flirt back? And there's you. It doesn't mean we want anything with you more than to feel good about ourselves. I have several guys I do this too at all times.

 

Appreciate the response. I guess I just don’t understand it??? I mean, I understand the ego boost part, but that’s what stuff like Tinder is for lol. Personally, I wouldn’t feel good about myself doing that to someone, especially because I had told her in the past that I sort of had a thing for her. The beginning of the "Aww" message, and suggesting coffee and making it clear she's got a hotel all give me a quiet but firm knock back vibe.

Also, just because it piqued my interest when it was mentioned, I never really cared about sex until it happened to become an option. Never chased it as a teen, nor was I especially worried about when it would happen.

Then it happened and ruined my innocence.

idk, I think it's quite common. It's just flirting.... fairly harmless? I think it's also common for guys to just sleep with women just to feel good about themselves... or just to get off...which is about strictly themselves. so what's the difference really?

 

Idk, just because it's common doesn't make it a healthy practice. Leading someone on can be damaging to others self-esteem big time.

 

In my particular case, I think the biggest issue is that when I brought it up she framed it as if I was crazy for thinking that was in the realm of possibility, despite the typical signs that would indicate so, and made me feel shitty for it. If she would have just been honest about it, then I wouldn’t have been upset. I mean, I wasn’t even that upset, we’re still friends, but I certainly keep my distance and don’t feed into any of that flirty shit anymore.

There’s no issue with having sex with someone to feel good about yourself imo. The issue almost always lies with communication and how honest you are about your intentions.

 

yeah I totally get that. if someone I was clearly flirting with ever made any move to go on a date or hookup and I didn't want to, I would tell them that that wasn't what I was looking for. but some two-sided flirting when neither of you make the effort or attempt to take it beyond that is harmless imo

and yeah, I didn't mean to imply there was! Just that they are both the same thing- "using" someone to feel good about yourself. Like you said communication and honesty is definitely key

 

Like @supernovagirl said it's pretty much just flirting. I get where people can see it's messed up BUT it is pretty common practice among almost everyone I know, women and men.

With that said there's usually a moment in time where it's somehow communicated that nothing else is wanted. Or it's one of those situations where you text and flirt but never actually follow through with hanging out. I've seen it happen both ways.

Then again I make a lot of bad decisions, so meh.
