When I was in high school I listened exclusively to neon pop punk. That fucking first The Maine album, Forever The Sickest Kids, Stereo Skyline... just the worst.

I was reading AltPress and Chamberlain Waits had a 4.5 or 5 star review in one issue, and that intrigued me so I went to try and download it. The site I used at the time only had that first album so I downloaded that and hooooly shit that album changed me. So I can't in good concious rank it last

I knew I'd get some hate for the yfw/devil placement but other than the order of the first two I feel like the national are barely debatable. High Violet is painfully mediocre imo.

 

High Violet is great and YFW is nothing compared to any of their other albums.

Who knew there'd ever be a thread where I could talk about those albums in the same breath

 

The National could record Aaron Dessner continuously jumping into a pool while Bryce plays the xylopones blindfolded with fake snakes while the Devendorfs circle the room punching everything as a means of percussion and Matt screams the entirety of the Crying of Lot 49 and it'd still probably be one of the best albums of the year and honestly I'd be very interested in that. They've yet to do something shy of monumental, let alone encroaching anywhere near the territory of mediocre.

They're an exceptional band for sure, and painfully mediocre is certainly underselling High Violet in the context of the genre. It's just a significant step down for them coming on the heels of two A+ level albums. Their trajectory to that point had been almost linearly upward - I'd probably argue they reached their peak on Alligator, but Boxer sustains those highs more consistently throughout its runtime - so it was really disappointing for them to follow up a masterpiece with a more narrowly morose Boxer retread with fewer, lower highs and weaker lyrics.

That it's a good or very good record in spite of this is a testament to their greatness, but it would take a real stinker for it to be displaced as the ugly duckling of their post-debut catalog for me.
