I completely get it - my thinking is I want to one day be official with this stuff, however I want a baseline knowledge to work from because I know the steep learning curve if I were to enroll myself in a class with absolutely no knowledge would be too much, for me at least. So I am gonna try self-learning for a little bit and then when I am comfortable with my baseline I would try to pursue certs/schooling. I'm not sure if this is the best way but it's what I have kind of planned out for myself.

 

Yeah there’s a ton of online (free) resources. Maybe start with like Java or something to learn the fundamentals

 

Very good point. Honestly my gut is telling me to look outside of coding. I'm too ADD dude, I think I would be bad at it haha.

 

I started on Code Academy but never really got started.

 

I'm also a dumb nerd who takes school wayyyyy too seriously so it's actually good for me to have direction and tangible markers of my progress (tests, hw, quizzes, etc.) and there are benefits to having structure and a teacher to lean on. So at some point that will be good for me, but I also know that coding camps can cost thousands of dollars and I just don't have it so I gotta work with what I got right now lol.

I also know going back for my master's and doing something like this with no knowledge would be dumb as hell.

 

edx is great for figuring out if you have any interest in something before you waste any money on it. Basically it saved me a lot of money lol

Going to the comic book store today!!!! There’s a new issue of Batman with a cameo appearance of a new Harley Quinn-esque character and my local comic store will buy it back for $25 in store credit...hell yeah time to get some shit

 

Why not give it a try with some free tools for now and see how it goes? Start with some youtube videos even - get an idea of what skills can land you what jobs, honestly I watched a video the other day and I was like whooaaa I don't know anything but learning the industry to start has actually been helpful:

The guy above went to a coding camp for 6 months after he graduated college and basically had a job at google almost immediately. Would be nice to have my parents support me while I did something like that but most of us don't have that luxury so he was lucky.

Obviously @Dirty Sanchez is gonna be the best person to talk to about it but in my search to understand the industry and places to source information from on coding specifically I've come across some things and can send them your way if you narrow down what you're looking to learn.
