Pinegrove - Skylight (September 28, 2018) Album • Page 87

Discussion in 'Music Forum' started by cwhit, Sep 27, 2017.

  1. The point was that this discourse is incredibly difficult to navigate for emotional abuse survivors in general and especially so for those who have PTSD. It's triggering.

I'll say it again. Let's discuss the album. If you want to discuss the allegations, make another thread for it. I'm here to talk music. Not that other issues aren't important, it's just stupid for anyone to pretend they understand this situation when there's so little information public about it.

  4. “Make another thread for it” Absolutely not lol. Fuck off with this kinda shit

If you disagree alright but I really don't appreciate "Fuck off with this kinda shit." The title of the thread is Pinegrove - Skylight (September 28, 2018), not Pinegrove sexual coercion allegations or even a Pinegrove general thread. Your first instinct being to cuss me out is troublesome.

I believe the conversation is worth having, but not the way it's being carried out currently, and I would like to discuss the album.

  6. Did you read the last like 10 pages?

If it’s about the band it belongs in here or in the accountability thread. The conversations were taking place in this thread. There’s no reason to make ANOTHER thread for this band.

Your instinct to shut down conversation surrounding abuse is even more so

We're going in circles. I disavowed Brand new instantly. It's disgusting, it's offensive, don't stick your nose up at me. I didn't listen to Pinegrove since, and only tuned back in since this release. The only thing I understand is that Evan did a shitty thing causing a girl to cheat on her boyfriend and seriously hurt her in some way. I obviously think that's bad. But I don't know anything else, nor does anyone, I think. I can't judge whether it crosses my moralistic line of would I associate with this person ever again, because I don't know. So what are we basing any of this on?

Damn you’re right if only the thread creator had foreseen these future allegations and included it in the title we’d be allowed to discuss

Also, has anyone censored talk about the album? People mentioned how it was kinda tone deaf at the peak of this discussion, but that’s just implying that it’s your judgement. All these people make these claims about how they can’t talk about the music without actually trying to talk about the music.

it's because what they really want is a place to talk about the album while also conveniently not having to be reminded that the musician they like abused someone, not a place where both are going on at the same time

Conversation was pretty much dead at this point, all you had to do was come in here and talk about the record but instead you made a condescending comment about how we shouldn’t be having a conversation we basically weren’t even having anymore

I'm more confused at all these responses than anything else. Did not mean to strike a hot chord or be condescending. I dislike being "ganged" upon though I apologize for triggering people. I'll see my way out of this thread and talk about the album elsewhere. Whether dead wrong or not, and I'm okay with being wrong, I don't like the personal animosity, negativity in here.

  22. I think you're confusing "triggering" people with "being incredibly condescending and people reciprocating in kind". Which, in turn, is coming off incredibly condescending. Triggering is a symptom of PTSD, not a synonym for being upset.

If you wanted to talk about the album, you could have done so. See below for a perfect elaboration to that point.

This isn't that hard. You're not being victimized, and I frankly don't believe that you're surprised by the responses given the tone that YOU came in here and set. You're exercising your freedom of speech, and people are letting you know how they feel about the things you're saying and, importantly, the way you're saying them. You can take it as a teachable moment, or not. The choice is yours.

Hearing that song debuted live approx. a year ago was an amazing experience. I had just had a terrible weekend of driving home to see my dad who had been unexpectedly hospitalized on his birthday and I was just really unhappy and not even sure I wanted to be at the show at all until they played that song. Obviously nobody knew the words but everybody was super attentive and respectful. You could hear a pin drop. After they finished playing it somebody near the front said “Holy shit” and everybody laughed and applauded. It was a really beautiful, wholesome moment of bringing the entire audience together in a feel-good way that I’m not sure this band will ever be fully capable of creating again after all of this, which is a shame, but I’m glad I got to experience it and the song is still very special to me.

We reach for the longest shadow

Darkness was okay to me when it leaked, but it clicked a lot more for me in the context of the album. The run of Easy Enough, Darkness, and Skylight is the true meat of this album in my eyes.
