Yeah, exactly this is my issue. The album is just incredibly boring and uninteresting. It just kind of pokes along, until it's finally done. Everything blends together. Nothing stands out. Lyrics are meh, etc.

Hope their next album is better. This feels like a bunch of uninspired songs to me.

If this album is really that mediocre, we can wonder why they stirred up all this pain and insisted to come back for something like this lol lol lol (male entitlement that's why)

I don’t think it’s mediocre but I do think it’s a very different album than cardinal and fans of that album could be disappointed.

It's definitely much more subdued than Cardinal, almost to a fault. I really like it, but there are moments where it's just like fuck, this is too sleepy. Pick it up a little bit.

I suspect I'll grow to appreciate it more on future listens, and there's already A LOT I like, but yeah, it's different.

It's a lot more lax and subdued then I was expecting. Also if we're supposed to consider this as a real LP then having Angelina on it feels weird, though it is one of my favorite PG songs.

album is fantastic. Not as as good as Cardinal for me but it doesn’t have to be honestly.

I’m fine with it being more subdued. I think I’m just used to listening to all of the live versions too, which are even more aggressive than their Cardinal counterparts.

I want to make it clear that I don't want to stifle any conversation regarding important matters of sexual misconduct. I do think that at a certain point these threads can just turn into back and forth bickering between users which is the "drama" I mentioned. And in order to try to get away from the cyclical arguing I said that I was going to begin speaking about the album, not that everyone should cease what they felt they needed to say.

Hmm. I appreciated the vibe-change Hotelier went for with "Goodness". I think that's a very experimental and interesting album. Fantastic lyrically too. They pulled it off.

I don't think Skylight is as big of a shift-stylistically as Goodness was for Hotelier.

Skylight just sounds like....a really slow Pinegrove. There's nothing particularly interesting, or different, happening on this album.

I just dont think they pull it off. The album is subdued to the point of becoming meandering and boring. The lyrics are meh and musically it feels pretty uninspired for them. The production is middle-of-the-road, but it'd be fine if the songs stood on their own better. It doesn't feel like they're growing on this album in anyway...to me.

So just wanted to clarify, I usually love when a band wants to shift, grow, experiment, or be avant-garde in their own way. But in this case, it just makes for a ....slog of a listening experience.

I'm going to give it 4 more listens though, but the first 2 listens really didn't sit well with me. I found myself waiting for it to be over by the half-point both times, just very boring.

I’m not sure if it’s the fact I already knew most of the songs here, or the general confusion about the situation (something which I’m still wrangling with if I’m honest) but something about this just feels “off”. Doesn’t feel cohesive at all and I don’t think all the really short songs help it, they’re almost like half an idea unfinished which is weird given how long this has supposedly been finished for.

    All a bit strange.

That’s completely fair. I see what you are saying and probably agree with you after thinking about it. I definitely don’t like this as much as Cardinal and i def don’t like it as much as Goodness

I honestly think Black Mile spoiled me the same way breaking bad has spoiled me. Just a tour de force where this is sort of laid out with not a ton of structure

Black Mile ruined Thrice for me. After Black Mile i assume my favorite bands will live up to that and they don’t ever get close

I’m sorry to have called you out so directly, but your original post really didn’t make that clear. When people try to push away important discussion because they want to “only talk about the music”, it’s really counter-productive and makes things more hostile.

I’m not saying you were trying to do that, but the original post kind of came off that way and it happens almost every time one of these discussions occurs on this site. There’s no reason both discussions can’t exist in the same thread, people can talk about the music while others are still navigating how to feel about the release in general.

Tl;dr, thank you for clarifying and sorry I snapped.

Oo yeah I like this comparison. The short interlude-like songs work for this as well.

  24. Man, tracks 2-6 make for a super weird run. A few too many short songs on this thing imo, and it doesn’t help that some of them are super old either. 7-11 is a perfect run though, record really comes together there. Amulet being so short almost doesn’t even matter when it rolls into Light On so perfectly
