i dont know much about evan or the rest of the band and never really watched or read interviews or anything, just knew em by the music, so there wasnt any personalities involved for me which makes it different and easier to fathom.

i'd say that for many fans of this band that's very different, part of pinegrove's huge rise has to do with social media presence and their sense of DIY mentality as well as how genuine they've always felt, hence the studio sessions they've put out. just one of those bands where the actual people were an important part of the band alongside the music

oh yeah for sure which i get and why for me it was different than it was for others who were really invested in them outside of the music

I saw them last year day after trump won the election and they made several speeches about safe spaces, and also was happy to see people like minded people there to enjoy music and creating a safe space....this month has taught me that spaces i felt so comfortable in as a young girl have turned out not to be. Thats hard to digest.

also after pwr bttm its gonna be hard to be surprised by a DIY "progressive" band being caught up in something like that. that was the ultimate tearing apart of the illusion of truly safe spaces

Yeah, I hate to do the "he seemed like such a sweet guy" thing, but if I'm being honest, he truly did. There was no way I could have known based on interviews, live shows, social media, and their tour videos that there was anything malicious about him behind the scenes.

It's really just extra proof that all idols are false, artists must be humanized, and any man in a position of power has the capacity to abuse their status.

yeah its important to recognize that re: any man in a position of power has the capacity to abuse their status. but i gotta have something that gives me hope there are decent humans in bands i listen to or i might just lose it. im prepared to go back on my admiration if things come to light about the people in bands i still admire, but id just get so depressed if i didnt have some hope to hold onto that its not all terrible out there. and ill never put someone on the kind of pedestal i put jesse lacey on when i was a teenager, but it gives me comfort to assume guys like geoff rickly, anthony green, etc. are truly good people doing the right things, and if i have to change that view i will.

there are definitely good people in bands, but we shouldn't be surprised when someone turns out to be. this shows you can't give any assumptions when it comes to abusive behavior, but not everyone does it! just gotta keep exploring, finding new stuff, there is so much to fill any void that you have musically

I feel the same way. We can acknowledge that capacity for abuse of power without losing our faith in the people we still admire and trust, I think. We can be aware and ready to react if need be without losing total hope. I definitely still need to believe that the artists I love also have a capacity for good and decency, because like you, if I let go of that, I might as well just give up.

It's important to know there are good people out there or else it gets hopeless

This one still hurts. My old friend of mine who I no longer speak to posted a few days before it came out what had happened that she wished PWR BTTM were about when she was in her early teens and struggling with such issues regarding her sexuality. It's a tweet that still pops into my mind quite regularly and I've thought about it ever since.

Also I really liked that band. Still stings a little.

Regarding putting people on pedestal's and being let down, I am as guilty as anybody. Jesse was never quite that for me though. I knew he was a kind of shitty person so yes I adored him and his output but I knew he had a shady past.

I've always been drawn to these darker characters for some reason. When I was 15 and stupid I loved ETF/Ronnie Radke before I realised just how shitty he was and lost all respect for him when he went to prison.

Justin Pierre, Laura Jane Grace, Gerard Way and Soupy, these are the people I really admire the most, and I hope they are not guilty of such issues.

Yeah, Justin Pierre is the only one from my young teenage years that I still look up to in that way haha. As far as hope and believing in people now - Camp Cope and Julien Baker

Kevin Devine has always been one of those people for me.

Pinegrove has been one of the few bands whose music (and overall demeanor outside of music) gives me the same feeling as his, so this whole situation has been a little rough for me.

Why are y'all doing this again? Pinegrove came up a bunch of times after the BN situation in terms of bands that are a beacon of positivity.

They got the rights to all their music back. Pretty sure Polyvinyl is in a bunch of legal drama regarding it all. You can't just pull an album like that when you have a contract.

edit: i dont think Ugly Cherries was ever pulled.

just ugly cherries, which is under their own name, father/daughter gave up the rights because of the legal battle they would have faced but polyvinyl hasn't given up the pageant rights yet

uh, yeah, they can. polyvinyl owns the record so they can do what they want with it (depending on contract). look at so many major label records

After reading everything, it honestly sounds like he was in a relationship with a girl with who he developed strong feelings for. They obviously met because of his music. Please no one get mad, but is this a bad thing? Is it a bad thing to meet someone on tour and develop a mature, consenting relationship with that person? Why should that now be frowned upon? And not for nothing, but the truth is that this woman was a GROWN WOMAN. I highly highly highly doubt that this kid was holding her in a relationship against her will. He even says that he felt like they were truly in love. If she felt uncomfortable, why on earth would you leave your current boyfriend for someone like that? And like i said, she is an adult, so if you think about it, if she was in such a bad position why did she let it carry on for so long? Did she lead him on? Did he lead her on? I don't know, I'm just thinking out loud and trying to make sense of the situation based on what's been released because i really wanted to see this band next month and pretty bummed about everything. I in no way support sexual misconduct of any kind. I just feel like every adult (and I highlighted adult because they are both of age, consenting adults), has control in the decisions they make. I guess in a nutshell, I just don't buy that this girl was absolutely forced into being with him. But like I said, we don't know everything. ok sorry for the rant.

i'm sure they are and there's a fight, but label contracts usually involve signing over a record. it's not pwr bttm's. i'm sure they're fighting to convince the courts that they should own it but this happens with major labels all the time. without knowing the contract it's hard to know though
