Im kind of in the same boat, but thats assuming that his statement is the entire truth. I have a suspicion that its worse than hes making it out to be...

 

Maybe I misunderstood your first comment since it wasn't directly quoting anyone. I see now you might have been asking, "how can they even be in a relationship with someone who isn't a fan because they are so big?" I thought you just meant that Taylor has some... interesting lyrics that could be read as coercion by some. I thought you were wanting to hold pop stars accountable but not rap artists because they are different cultures.

My apologies if I wrongly assumed anything.

Also: I don't think you can hold every artist to "They shouldn't have relationships with fans". I think that is a person by person circumstance. If they can be in a relationship like that without having problematic authority over their partner, great. But if not, like it seems Evan might be, it's best to just stay away from that completely.

Oh not at all. I haven't even properly listened to her since RED so I'm not sure on her music to be honest, I've only liked the odd song since then so haven't dived into the albums.

 

My comment abstention did not last long. I can't stop thinking about the line about looking at the crowd and trying to figure out who would want to sleep with him. I get that the way it's worded is very creepy sounding, but is it really any different than being in a bar and trying to notice who is maybe giving you the look. The only difference here is the power dynamic between fan/performer, and I suppose on a darker level not being aware of the age of that person. And that's a pretty serious issue, but addressed elsewhere in the statement. I am really just thinking out loud here. Not trying to justify anything he did. This is a difficult conversation.

Edit: I've thought about it further and the comment doesn't sit right with me. The way he phrases it implies it goes further than just trying to note who is attracted to him, but more that he would go on to actively seek these people out. In either case, it is gross to do especially as a band member with a young crowd. Even more, this is his job. I couldn't get away with that in my office, and I don't see this being different.

 

I don't know. He's just another person using his lead singer ego to get laid. I'm not too worried if they disband and let another talented artist into the spotlight.

 

We're good then. Some people could kind of look at a song like I Did Something Bad or Gorgeous in a kind of 0_o light, especially.

 

I think the power dynamics are the key here really. He knows an awful lot of people would do that with a musician they admire more easily than if he was just another guy.

 

Out of pure curiosity I shall look. but yeah, definitely a subject for another time.

but clearly hes not "just another" when hes getting help, hes doing things way differently than most people have in this situation... People can be rehabilitated.. and what spotlight are you talking about? I don't really think it works that way.

 

I hesitate to even say this because I really hate speculating/turning it all into a guessing game, but Kiley from Petal is tweeting a couple things that I would have to assume are in response to Evan's statement. I respect her immensely, so I really value her opinion on something like this, and it's not making me feel great about it all.

 

It's funny cus I'd go on a limb and say 9/10 people who say that listen to almost no rap or hip-hop, so why even comment on that culture in the first place.

Is not being able to assess who may want to consent to fuck you litetally undermining the very idea of consent? I'm not saying there may not be more to this, but when I was single I've been in a room and looked around wondering if anybody seemed sexually interested in me. As a man, how are you supposed to establish consent if we are unallowed to ponder those parameters?

I'm legitimately asking and not trying to evade blame. I just think men may have to be entirely abstinent on tour to appease some people on here. If women aren't allowed to fuck men in bands, aren't you indirectly stripping them of their power and desires?

 

This is literally the conversation happening here. It's a murky area we're all trying to navigate. There's no one right answer
