that record's emotional resonance hit super hard with a lot of people, not sure they can do that again but for those it didn't hit super hard (like me) i bet they can

I hope vocally he varies his sound more, wouldn't mind if they ended up screaming a bit more too.

Very interested in where they go from here. Keep You was a true 10/10 record.

How can they possibly follow up Keep You?! I'm ready to find out!

I like the National thing they talked about on Keep You, more of that would be cool but also I like everything they've done so I'm just excited

This and Julien Baker are easily my two most anticipated for the year, and they have both a pretty much equal shot of being my AOTY.

I'm anticipating this really highly even though I had no idea I was. I underrate them a little bc they're so quiet

I honestly thought Keep You might have been their last

Was thinking the same thing. It was beloved by people who listened to it but it didn't feel like it broadened their appeal. Maybe they are thinking one more album can get them over "the wave" hump and put them into a broader category of indie.

Weird how Pianos has the best chance sonically of crossover appeal (as of keep you) from that small niche of bands but it seems like touche amore was the one to do it from my perspective

I think you are right. Which is impressive because their sound has changed but it still vocally and thematically heavy.

Doesn't Title Fight have a decent "pitchfork" following?

Yeah, if anything Touche has added elements to their sound but not necessarily toned down things like intensity so I find it cool. And for all the National vibes on Keep You, there is still more edge than I feel like the National has so Pianos are still different enough for people to find interesting.

Feels like Title Fight made that shift too but Title Fight also toured with a wider variety of bands circa Hyperview and I don't remember if Pianos did anything similar

pianos were on that tour with menzingers and mewithoutyou, pretty different if you ask me.

    and the sidekicks
all those bands have a lot of scene overlap though, not really that different

sonically different, but yeah would argue the scene overlap doesn't come out to the same effect for them. If anything, I'd argue the Menzingers are the outliers on that first bill. Meanwhile Title Fight was touring or doing one offs with more indie crowd approved™ bands like waxahatchee, girlpool, and Alex g. In the last few years I feel like those arbitrary scene divisions mean less which is cool but when those announcements came out I was still surprised

I saw Pianos on tour after Keep You came out with TWIABP, Turnover, and Take One Car. That was a great show. I really wonder where they'll go next.

Holy shit what a lineup. Take One Car needs way more attention than they've gotten

Keep You is by far their best release, but my favorite song by them will always be "I'll Get By"
