I watched 3 Behind The Music docs about Journey, Styx, and REO Speedwagon yesterday so here’s some interesting tidbits I know you’re all dying to learn

-REO Speedwagon is credited with creating power ballads

-all of the members of Styx hate Dennis DeYoung

-Journey are embarrassed by all of their music videos

-all 3 of these bands are absolutely corporate rock but they all genuinely believe they’re writing deep, moving, complex music

-for some reason I always thought Steve Perry was like kicked out of the band but he just didn’t want to be in the spotlight anymore.

-Tommy Shaw is the only person from any of these bands to come across as likable.

-Tommy Shaw used to play in a band with Ted Nugent and one of their songs opened by mocking “Babe” by Styx. This made Dennis DeYoung cry

-all of these bands had extremely similar career arcs of starting of as kinda legit then losing members and then adding a member that comes along and makes the band start writing ballads and then everyone fights and does drugs

-this isn’t specific to these bands but I’m amazed at how many bands from the 70s and 80s just pumped out albums like every year. It took REO Speedwagon 11 albums to even chart.

-these documentaries made me realize how much time I waste
