Sanders winning Nevada was probably the most optimistic I've been as an adult.

Same thing happened with Lord of the Rings too. They really should have a Best Ensemble Award like other shows do (as well as Best Stuntperson, Best Animation Artists). But it’s a show that’s too stuck in its ways or introduces stupid awards that it walks back.

It’s really annoying how everyone is making a big fuss about Margot not being nominated when the reality is the women nominated all have better performances and other just as qualified actresses were also not recognized (Greta Lee, Penelope Cruz, Natalie Portman) and also the fact that everyone is talking about Margot not getting in as some knock against feminism or some great injustice related to women when…a) the category she didn’t get in for was a category with ONLY women and b) the fact that all this attention is on Margot and not the fact that REAL strides were made yesterday when Lily Gladstone was nominated, the first time ever a women who is Native American has been nominated for best actress (which IS huge specifically for this awards show because of how Sacheen Littlefeather was treated) But no, people wanna care about someone who has received recognition in the past for the academy and who is being recognized as a producer for the movie not getting in.

Also shit like this is just so stupid (the original tweet for the first one)

Like, I get it, it’s a little ironic Ryan got in and not Margot, but I just wish the attention was on actual gains made. Not just Lily, but also that a WOC from the movie was nominated! I get that you can be mad that Margot didn’t get in and happy for others, but that’s not what I’m seeing online at all. I’m only seeing outrage for Margot and nothing for the other nominees, which I don’t think is cool.

At this point I've seen more discourse with people pushing back than I have about people being upset that she wasn't nominated. The Hillary tweet is very funny, though.

Ryan Gosling should have had to say specifically which nominees should have been removed for Robbie and Gerwig.

The Gerwig miss is fine imo. It’s her third best movie and the nominees in director are all great.

The Robbie miss is a little worse because I just don’t think Nyad and Maestro need to be nominated for anything, two movies no one will care about in 6 months. Robbie performance is very good and Barbie IS a relevant movie that will remain relevant.

We could also talk about Colman Domingo, a Black gay man nominated for playing a Black gay man! Extremely cool moment

Also Nimona, a movie centering queerness and being a metaphor for transness by a trans man, getting the animation nom is tremendous

animated category was good this year. Definitely nice that they didn't just give Disney a pass on Wish.

So in a lot of the articles about Greta and Margot missing out, they all leave out the most important point which is who are you removing to put them in? Most pieces I've read go on about how it's such a travesty, but won't make a statement on whose place they should of taken. There's always snubs, but very rarely are people willing to say A got snubbed because B unrightfully took their place. I get it's not nice to take a moment like this and diminish someone's achievement, but if you're going to go on record saying someone rightfully missed out, state the correction you'd have made.

I see some of you addressing it in here, but a lot of opinion pieces seem to tip toe around actually addressing the swap they'd make.

I’m starting to wonder if the overall quality of the movie should also factor into the nomination. It’s kind of like giving the MVP to a guy/girl on the worst team in the league, doesn’t happen. There’s so many acting noms that go to good performances in largely mediocre or bad movies (generally biopics!). And then ten years down the road we go “huh, what the fuck happened here”.
