Haven't seen King Richard, Nightmare Alley, Belfast or Don't Look Up and not that interested in any of them honestly. I'll probably see them at some point.

nightmare alley is maybe the least bit better than shape of water if that means anything

I can't think of anything I'd rather do less than rank movies haha

best needle drop would be the best way for the Oscars to be populist

Best stunts/stunt work. I’ve seen the work they do firsthand and they deserve more recognition.

I really liked The Shape of Water so it does! haha. I also saw some people say it was on par with Crimson Peak though which I hated. Del Toro is so hit or miss for me.

seems like in recent years there's been a lot of folks who turned the corner on crimson peak resulting in a higher critical standing of sorts, for what THAT may be worth. have yet to hate anything of his* but there's been a couple i feel like should've been better than how they turned out (pacific rim, easily)

*haven't seen mimic, waiting on director's cut but hbo max for some reason has it listed with the same runtime as theatrical which sounds wrong

Yeah a friend and I have talked about wanting there to be an award for best soundtrack / best use of a song that already existed. But then the monkey’s paw is that every year Fortunate Son/For What It’s Worth keeps winning as best reminder that we are now watching a movie set in the 60s

    Best Opening Credits Sequence

    Best Trailer

Casting also seems like one major production role that never gets any direct award. Idk how one would necessarily judge it, but it’s not like that’s ever stopped them for other awards

trailer seems like a weird one to me since it’s so studio-driven and we’ve heard time and time again about the director having no clue how the trailer would end up. whereas every currently existing category is still largely under their purview

Make an award out of it to let directors push for studios to let them have more of a hand in making them unique and interesting

Wow Zimmer finally wins after almost 30 years for his like 16th best score. It’s good for the movie but nothing near as monumental as Inception, Interstellar, Batman etc. but I guess that’s just how these award shows go.
