exactly right, your reaction to the scene says something about you and elements that are ingrained in our culture/society. the whole article in the la times, which leans on Chaw, is really well done. i think a lot of the choices QT has made in this film, many of which are deliberately ambiguous, say more about how viewers react to it

And maybe that's kind of the point given Cliff is a vanguard of old hollywood and we are seeing it entirely from his recollection?

  4. I read the LA Times article and agreed with everyone except Chaw

yeah, this is probably my biggest complaint with the film.

also, what was up with that nasty cough Rick had the morning of the pilot shoot? my assumption was it would end up with him having like lung cancer or something, but it was totally gone after his talk with the young girl.

That was my first assumption as well... do chain smokers cough like that when they're hungover?

  7. I think I'd be a bit more okay with Cliff's version of Lee if Tate's version of Lee was given any dialogue whatsoever to give her flashback more weight to counteract Cliff's.

On another note, does Tate's character have any agency in this other than to not die? As much as I loved Margot in this, it's not really one of the stronger female characters Tarantino's written. idk, maybe normalcy is the best thing for her. Have that baby, live that life.

Yep, I work with a few heavy smokers, it’s fucking gross. And they usually don’t have a problem spitting right in the garbage too.

  10. Saw this last night and thought it was great. Good performances across the board. Several memorable scenes. Will probably need to watch it again to really know how I feel about it.

Was Manson only in one scene? (Visiting the Tate house)... re-watching the trailer afterwards looks like he spotted Cliff when he was on the roof but I don't remember that when I watched the movie.

There wasn't any contact of any kind between Manson and Cliff/Rick in the movie. You're remembering it correctly.

I think a huge part of why Tate’s role in this is so resonant to me is that her agency is that she was just living her life. That it had no crossover with the Manson family is amazing, it’s what she deserved and the movie views her as a normal actress/person, and leaves the violence and murder to the fictional protagonists of this fairy tale.

Connected slightly to Lee, since Tate was a real person and we know Lee trained her, we can take her flashback as a more authentic Bruce than Cliff’s, since obviously Cliff isn’t real and never interacted with Lee, so as with everything involving Cliff, we can take his story as one of a heightened, amplified, Cliff Booth-ified Hollywood narrative

I've seen some pretty good, rational arguments in here for why Cliff's Lee is the way it is. Yeah, a lot of what everyone's saying makes sense. However, I can't help but feel like there's going to be someone out there--who's never had a meaningful interaction with an Asian person in real life before, because they live somewhere where there's just not that many Asian people--who will take this characterization of Lee at face value and have that affect their view of the Asian community as a whole, and I think that's the root of why I dislike it--and any caricature of Asian-ness--so much. Like, there's my rational response, then this general fear of being othered because of media misrepresentation.

Absolutely loved this, like instantly became one of my favorite Tarantino movies, and they're all still fresh because I did a big rewatch before seeing this one too. I know some people have issues with the "hangout" elements but I just loved every second of it, it didn't feel like a nearly 3 hour long movie at all to me. Can't wait to own this and rewatch it a bunch of times

That last part also made me realize that Brad Pitt is probably one of my favorite actors ever
