Idk, I took the seen in the car with Cliff and Pussy as more adding to the questionable nature of his character, like he's scuzzy as hell because he's only declining her offer because she isn't 18 and he doesn't want to go to jail. Just building out the general suspiciousness of Cliff as a character, like the rumor about his wife. Not "wow this is such a good guy he waits until the clock strikes midnight on her 18th birthday to go for it."

Brad Pitt's innate charm didn't make me realize he was the bad guy duh

I felt bad that Rick gets the nice house and fame while Cliff lives in a trailer

Yeah I mean it's like @Wharf Rat said:

There's plenty of characters that are horrifically evil, way more vile than Cliff Booth, and are still likeable. Look at Hannibal Lecter (especially on the television series). It's, like, been a thing in storytelling since the beginning. I don't know why we've come to this point where making a bad character (even just an allegedly bad character) likeable in a movie or tv show or novel or whatever is inherently wrong.

My initial response to the film was slight disappointment (as a hardcore QT nerd) - but I think it will probably grow on me with a 2nd viewing.

PS - people saying after Cannes "it's his closest film to Pulp Fiction", what the hell? I don't see that at all. I might argue it's his LEAST "similar to Pulp" movie. Certainly, plot-wise, it's his film with the least amount of an actual plot, right? I enjoyed the characters and the vibe and setting, but it just had less plot turns or surprises than his typical.

As such - didn't we all know that this would end with him rewriting history to have Tate live? I was a little bummed that the ending was exactly what I feared it might be, and that he reused the same trick that was so unique and effective in IB. Feels lazy to me.

Now........having said that - it was remarkably well-acted (like all his films), and there were individual scenes I adored - namely Bruce Lee, the ranch, and the ending scene at the house, among several others. He had my attention for the full 2:40. I thought Pitt absolutely stole the show.

In the end I liked it and I look forward to seeing it again. But if I was ranking QT movies this would be in the bottom half for sure.

Tarantino stated that the story consists of multiple parallel stories and is the closest thing to his earlier film Pulp Fiction.

I took Cliff’s attitude towards Pussy as amused intrigue as much as I took it as sexual interest

Re: Cliff potentially killing his wife, I liked the “anybody accidentally kills anybody they go to jail. It’s called manslaughter” with the added context.

I loved this. Leo running back to the pool with the flamethrower was great. I absolutely loved the ending. Allowing Tate and her friends to live was the best move.Screw Tex Watson.

Speaking of the ending and I don’t know if it was discussed here... I liked how Rick ultimately got redemption by being embraced by the Tate clan and hints he’d get to work with Polanski for a career comeback with American audiences. Would he go on to play Jake Gittes in Chinatown? Is it safe to assume this revisionist history mean Polanski won’t rape that girl (he’s said that for years mourning Sharon’s death, he engaged in drugs and sex as self medication... not justifying the act, but with Sharon alive in this alternate history, would he remain a loyal husband and father?

    Was it redemption?
It felt like a commentary on his self centered nature.

Like not even that insane interaction, could sway him from thinking about “ricks career”.

I love the ending of the film. The tension of having Manson and his followers appear in several scenes leading up to a moment that's essentially a punchline saying "and then those motherfuckers came to the WRONG street" was cathartic as hell and almost made up for the scene with Bruce Lee getting punked out in a way that would never happen.

Also, Cliff is an extra peculiar character for me because of how that dude for whatever reason is so similar to my father lol. Like UNCANNY. It's like Pitt could've been playing my Dad as he appeared in the late 70's (a bit younger than Cliff). Same vibe, voice, mannerisms, history of serving in Vietnam, fashion sense (when he was younger) and everything. Safe to say Tarantino and Pitt know their stuff when bringing that era to life, and it added an extra dimension of authenticity and weirdness to the film on my initial viewing.

I haven't seen a ton of Tarintino so I don't have a lot to compare it to but I think I really liked this. I loved all the car scenes, the editing when Sharon was watching the movie and it cuts back to her training with Bruce Lee, Leo's trailer freak out and of course the end. Probably not something I'd rewatch because of the length and some parts did drag to me but I had a lot of fun watching it!

I truly think I would have enjoyed the ending if they toned down the over the top, shrieking Muppet performance of the girl who takes the can to the face. I rewatched that part again and it's so fucking irritating. Reminds me of Daryl Hannah getting her eye plucked out in Kill Bill, another Tarentino scene I absolutely hate.
