I listened to a full album of theirs back when they were Now Now Every Children, and did not like it

This however is quite poppy and good.

 

then i guess you missed maybe the best album of the 10s in the meantime

it's called Threads! it's the only album they're released since then, to be fair

 

that's fair, I was mostly bugging anyways. Threads is it?

 

that's the one! it's a brilliant, moody piece of ambient, shoegazey pop.

 

Threads seems good, although seeing the cover I def listened when it came out too. Memories of 2012. Will revisit.

That said, these 3 new songs are fantastic: AZ, SGL, Yours are all immediately great

 

AZ sounds a lot like The Bus Song by Jay Som

 

SGL could be a huge alternative radio hit. I'll be quite surprised if it isn't.

 

i mean, the song has been out for a year, so unless the label (which barely exists) wants to push it hard now, it won't

 

Fair enough. It would be a bummer if this album doesn't get a real push.

 

I'm torn on these tunes a day later. Very concise pop songwriting, and solid melodies all 3, but I can't help but think that under her cute vocals and the endlessly repeated phrases, there's not a lot going on here.

I hear the Jimmy Eat World comparisons sometimes in the sound, and myself I hear plenty of Stars and Jay Som, but the lyrical depth isn't there.

Ah well. Not always crucial.

 

Not only my favorite album so far this year, but definitely my favorite lyrics of the year as well. Reading someone say there's no "depth" to them is virtually incomprehensible to me.

If that 10x in a row is lyrical depth, then I dunno, different strokes

 

If looking at just the chorus of one song that's specifically tailored around the beat and vocals to propel you through a night drive song is the only way to measure lyrical depth, then, well, I think that's bonkers. But, since I was talking about the album and not one song, here's some examples (roughly translated) why I said what I did:

I'll make it easy for you baby, remove myself from your equation

I was staring at the light through the window,
I was waking up feeling undone,
I was crying outside on the front lawn,

Yes, I think there's some lyrical depth on this album exploring growing up, mid-adulthood, sexuality, and walking the line between catchy, electronic experimentation, and heartbreakingly sad and poignant moments. Simple words that tell grand stories. I think the Jim Adkins comparisons are dead on.

 

Yeah, the more I listen to "AZ" the more I think of Jimmy Eat World.
