Completed Mark of the Ninja today. What a wonderful game, I had a lot of fun with it.

 

I grew up playing both FF and DQ games. FF is much better, and it's not close. DQ is way too formulaic, FF at least took risks here and there.

I still love DQ tho. I just beat 9 last year, that was a great game.

Also shoutout to the GBA DQ Monsters games

 

the last three traditional DQ titles are considered three of the best of the series whereas FF XV and the XIII trilogy are considered series lows for FF. even XII spent most of its decade being considered pretty meh, and has only become beloved as more poor entries into FF have come along to boost it by way of comparison. FF may try a bunch of new things but they're often half baked or worse.

 

DQM is so underrated it hurts. i wanted that 3DS remake of DQM2 to get localized so bad.

 

XV is definitely not a series low. Also XII was great from day one hush.

 

feels like you're in the minority on that first part and reception overall definitely felt pretty middling for XII in my corners of the world

 

Idk the PS2 version of XII has a 92 on Metacritic, that’s pretty good.

 

i 100% prioritize audience scores over critic scores and always had in my head that XII was not very good because of countless gamefaq and ign board discussions of ranking the series, it put me off from playing XII for a long time, and i do think it's a good game. but XII being a polarizing title is something i was steadily reinforced in believing as an outsider for like five years

just checked MC and it's a 75% user score which is very much in line with what i used to understand

 

Yeah ignoring the polarization of the fan base would be pretty revisionist.

(It’s pretty similar to the last Jedi in that regard.)

 

Yeah I don’t normally go by user reviews myself, I don’t tend to trust the general public’s opinions on things lol. I read critic reviews to get a general sense of things but really if I want to get something I get it unless the reviews are like abysmal.

 

I'm kinda more the opposite, if a community i have agreed with many times in the past, like this one, jocks a game im way more inclined to try it. like i had never heard of Hob but now it's my next buy. i could find a reviewer or publication like that as well but it's harder for me. really the closest i get to critical stuff is Giant Bomb because it's so conversational, it's like listening to a forum thread of rational people and that just speaks to me more. the lazy summation of it is, i dont wanna know if a game is objectively good, i wanna know if i specifically would like it lol

 

Well if you were friends with me back then you might’ve played it sooner because I would’ve been raving about it lol

 

One thing I know to be true is that Final Fantasy XIII-2 is extremely underrated

 

I do actually think XII is a good game it's just a 7/10
