    RIP EmoPunkKid28: 2002-2016 Prestigious

I just started Pokemon Moon, and was thinking of purchasing Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy, Donkey Kong Country Returns, and Smash Bros. Maybe I'll just use the GC to help purchase some of these games.

Not sure if it's too late now since Switch is 2 months away but I grabbed a Wii U back in June with the same intention.

So worth it. I obviously can't speak for those who had a Wii U since day one but there are so many impressive games on here. These last few months have probably been my busiest for games in a long time, majority of them on wii u/3DS.

    Ongoing:
    3DS - Codename Steam
Enjoying it so far. The missions can get pretty length though. Also I feel like I'm doing trial and error more than actually strategizing. Still need more time with it but I'm not the biggest fan of how the grid-based system is used.

Unless you really have a Smash itch I think it might be better to hold that off for now.

Still hoping for a Switch version

I don't know, for me the only Nintendo game worth that level of praise this year is Pokemon Sun/Moon. Nothing of note came out for Wii U and the only other 3DS game I would consider putting on that level, Fire Emblem Fates, is disqualified because of Nintendo's artificial scarcity/scalper-friendly attitude toward the special edition of the game.

    I did love Pokemon though.

Yeah, well, as much as I love their games and have loved their games my whole life, I'm personally not going to praise them for their terrible business practices.

can't be made fun of Prestigious

Fire Emblem was a bonafide niche franchise until Awakening, which was anticipated to be a swan song until it sold above expectations in both eastern and western markets. I agree that the collector's edition should've been made more available, but this special edition was an anomaly in that it legitimately contained different software than the standard edition. 99% of special edition games come with a code for additional content in addition to a standard retail copy. With the two games being on one cart in this instance, it therefore required it's own production run, and gauging how many folks would be willing to pay $80-90 for an installment of a franchise that just left life support is a reasonable worry.

I was super bummed I couldn't snag one, but it's still probably the best strategy RPG of the last ten years imo and it would be crazy to disqualify it.

There's a very simple solution to all this: announce an open preorder period prior to beginning production, take as many preorders as people are willing to make, produce that many (plus a little extra) and everyone that wants one, gets one. It's insulting to the fans who have stuck by the franchise despite it's niche status (myself most definitely included) to favor scalpers who use bots to buy up all the copies and then sell them for ridiculous markups on eBay. I'm sorry but there's no amount of rationalization that can make what they do okay.

And it keeps happening. The amiibos, the Majora's Mask New Nintendo 3DS XL, the NES Classic. I guarantee if they make a SNES Classic it, too, will suffer from crippling supply shortages. This strategy of rewarding the re-sell market at the expense of hardcore fans must be successful for them somehow (even though that defies all logic and business sense) because they keep doing it. If disqualifying that game is how we let them know we're sick of it, then that's what I'm going to do. Not saying anyone else has to join me, though.

Possible? Yes. Simple? Not so sure. Preorders can be cancelled. Ever been to a Gamestop and seen a big box special edition of an Assassin's Creed or Borderlands game that's two iterations old? Gamestop bought that, wholesale, and it is now taking up space that could display 2-3 other SKUs and probably will until they suck it up and sell it for a loss. Sometimes they charge you up to half of the game's price to preorder it, sure, but that's still "cancellable" due to return policies.. I preordered the special edition of Xenoverse 2, saw the reviews, and cancelled it a day after launch. Full refund, and they are stuck with the big ass box. The only way the "open preorder" technique succeeds in practice is for the publishers to take paid-in-full preorders directly from the consumer and fight giving refunds, which on top of the already obvious issues this could cause with purchasers, would damage their relationship with suppliers who are now losing out on the cut they get for being the middle man on a big title.

There was clearly a rabid demand for this game, though, so even if they were cancelled someone would have bought them (scalpers, fans, etc.) You think there are any unsold copies of this out there in a store somewhere? Or that there would have been any? This is not the same thing as a worthless Assassin's Creed special edition that nobody wanted when it was brand new, let alone months later when new games have come out. And regardless, they could make the preorders operate through their own website and say that there are no refunds. Ubisoft did something similar for South Park: The Fractured But Whole, to ensure that people weren't preordering, getting their free copy of The Stick of Truth on current-gen consoles, and then canceling. So it's possible to do.

Any guesses as to what games Nintendo will announce for the Switch during the presentation on the 12th?

There are plenty of reasons for why most of Nintendo's business practices, including the scarcity of some of their products, are "good" and make sense, especillay for the video games industry as a whole. I'm tired of this never ending argument though, so I'm not gonna name them again.

Did the Wii U/3DS even get a good mystery dungeon game?

The Pokemon one is obviously easy, and while I enjoyed Etrian Mystery Dungeon, later on it really dragged while not getting any harder.

I remember playing Shiren the Wanderer on the DS. It was just so fun.

I'm not convinced that the Mario game is going to be a launch title but really I have no reason to doubt the information. Just my own skepticism. Would really, really love to be wrong about it obviously.

Once again, the following info comes from Laura Kate Dale

    - There's a record button on the left Joy-Con.
    - There will be no friend codes, DeNA is helping Nintendo with the networking.
    - Laura was asked if there was the possibility of Red Dead Redemption 2 or Overwatch coming to the Switch. Regarding Red Dead, she stated that there's almost no way it's going to happen due to Rockstar's relationship with Nintendo. She assures that Overwatch wouldn't be there at launch, and the two stated that it would require a massively overhauled port due to the 'always-online' nature of the title.
    - Don't expect a delay for the Nintendo Switch.
    - The system will have Bluetooth, not sure to what extent.
    - The Joy-Cons will be available to be purchased separately at launch date. Docks will be purchasable after 6 months and will be 'cheap'.
    - There won't be a bundle that includes the Pro Controller, they will be purchaseable separately.
    - The battery will last around 3 hours with everything at maximum.
    - The charging port is USB and will easily and quickly charge the system.
    - Only expect three virtual console Gamecube games at launch, they will be optimized for their original resolutions.
    - At launch there will only be one color of the Switch, and it will be the default grey. However, there's a slight chance that there will be multiple colors after launch.
    - The right Joy-Con has an IR pointer akin to the Wiimote, this will allow touch-screen functionalities while docked.
    - The entry bundle for the switch will have 32GB of onboard storage, Micro SD card support will extend to 128 GB.
    - When asked about Mass Effect Andromeda, she brought up the point that Mass Effect 3 sold horrendously on Wii U and that there are no plans to release the title.

    Rockstar's relationship with Nintendo?

I've heard Rockstar "doesn't trust Nintendo" and I'm not sure what that means exactly. Maybe they don't trust them to make a console where 3rd parties can find success. Maybe they're disappointed with the sales of their Wii and DS efforts. Your guess is as good as mine.

I really loved Chinatown Wars but I also heard it was pirated so badly it actually hurt the sales.

Chinatown Wars ‘suffered due to piracy’

Maybe that was partly it? I'm just guessing though haha.

That said, I'm not really craving for a GTA or RDR on the go. I feel like those are games that are better off as consoles/PC games maximizing the best specs out there. But if they get announced on Switch I would probably grab them.

That time of the year when I try to add all of my playtime. Here's the result:

    3DS - 980ish hours
    Wii U - 260ish hours
